Art & Life with Mallory Haren

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Haren.

Mallory, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Carlsbad, California and went to college at the University of California, Irvine. I have always loved taking photos but never thought it would become a career. I was actually getting my teaching credential at UC Irvine when I realized that my heart was with photography. I took a leap of faith and began my business and the rest is history. Now I know this is what I was meant to do and can’t imagine my life any other way!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a fine art film wedding & portrait photographer based out of Southern California. I absolutely love photographing weddings. It has become my greatest passion in life and I am so thankful for all of the beautiful love stories I get to be a part of. I began my business in 2012 and started shooting weddings in 2014. Since then, I have had the honor of being a part of countless weddings. Being married myself; I know how stressful it can be to plan a wedding and I want to help make the process a little bit easier! I am a film photographer, which means I shoot primarily film. That’s right – old-school medium format film. Once I started shooting film, I never looked back. The colors, textures, and softness that film can produce in an image are breathtaking. I feel like film truly represents my brand and style of photography. In short, film is timeless and that is what I want for my clients. I pride myself on making my couples feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera, so they can truly enjoy their wedding day! I would describe my style as bright, soft, romantic and elegant. I can honestly say that I value the relationships I create with my clients. I only photograph a limited number of weddings each year to ensure my couples receive the best service possible.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
One of the biggest challenges that artists are facing today in my opinion is finding clients who will value their work. With photography, so many people are picking up cameras and taking pictures, but a lot of people forget that it is an art form and takes a lot of skill and a creative mind to produce breathtakingly beautiful images. It is so refreshing when I come in contact with a client who really values my work and wants to hire me because they love the images I create.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Instagram has become a huge part of my business! I post the most frequently on that platform: www.instagram.com/mallorydawnphoto. I also share a lot of my work on my website and blog: www.mallorydawn.com. If you want to follow along to see more of my journey I would really appreciate it!
