Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Misako Darrough.
Megan, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My work is influenced by the cultures that surround me. I’m half Japanese, half American. I was born and raised primarily in America while periodically living in Japan for stretches of time. There were a lot of cultural bridges to cross, to say the least! I was inspired by both American and Japanese art growing up.
I enjoy telling stories, through visual mediums such as paintings or sculptures or graphic novels. Many things inspire me, from the people I meet to the number of colors in a single flower. The human mind has an interesting capacity for storytelling, and I like to string together ideas that create a unique twist and turn that makes the creativity flow in our minds.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’ve always loved to see a clean, brand new slate of paper, it excites me: A new world to begin. I use a lot of symbolisms and archetypal images in my work. This allows for the viewer to use their own imagination in deciphering the images.
If there is one thing you should know about my work, it is that whatever you think or feel about it is a reflection of the truth of your own nature. The archetypes and images I use serve as a question that asks of you why you see things the way you do, by looking through the window frame of the art piece.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
As an artist I think there’s a drive to say something, to make something and to shape and create new aspects of the world.
The role of the artist is to serve as a sign post for all the things going on in the world. We sound the alarm when something is going on, and reflect beauty when the world flows with joy. Because the world is ever-changing, the role and purpose of the artist is ever-changing as well.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is displayed at different shows and galleries at different times, often here in San Diego. Check out my blog on my website, or watch out for announcements on my social media pages to get the latest updates on shows and new works posted.
You can find some post cards and other prints at the local Fahrenheit 451 book store in Carlsbad CA, and some products of my work are available online at https://society6.com/meganmdarrough
Any kind of support can greatly help artists get their work out and seen by more eyes. I think one of the best and easiest ways for people to support artist’s work now a days is through online media support: this can include leaving likes and comments on artist’s works posted online, to sharing their work and event infos through your own social media pages – any of these are a great way help get their work out there and reach out to wider audiences.
