Art & Life with Nancy Levinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Levinson.

Nancy’s been drawing and painting since childhood and took her first real painting and drawing classes at the Art Institute of Chicago when she was a teenager. But when choosing a major in college she chose what she thought would enable her to earn a living and graduated with a BS in Interior Design. The silver lining was a career in San Francisco and Los Angeles. But long story short she gave up that career to raise two children and return to painting and drawing. Most of that time was spent taking classes and workshops at the Scottsdale Artist’s School in Scottsdale Arizona. She studied with Milt Kobayashi, Aaron Westerberg, Ron Hicks, Peggy Kroll-Roberts and other distinguished artists. Then about fifteen years ago she did a series of dog paintings she showed at a Phoenix gallery. That was when people started to commission her to paint their dogs which she continues to do today. She has been in numerous group shows in Az. and San Diego including The Schemer Museum art Fest. in Scottsdale and Art Walk at Liberty Station.

Nancy is currently working on an MFA with an emphasis on painting and drawing with the Academy of Art Univ., San Francisco. As an online student she spends her time in her studio full time working on her classes and painting in North Park at Art on 30th in North Park. There she sells work out of her studio and works among a community of artists that inspire her. Her door is always open for visitors

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I love to make messes in my studio and canvases sing. It’s the happy place I occupy with juicy oils and soft brushes that give soul and humanity to canines while expressing eccentricities in figures. An occasional pretty picture of objects and landscapes will appear…. but my heart is in our quirks and what makes us all human. My passion is to paint and it’s my privilege is to be an artist above all. When my work puts a smile on your face my wish has been granted.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Given everything that is going on the world today the artist has a responsibility to either express our fears and concerns. The artist must also bring joy and beauty to a people that desperately need it.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
