Today we’d like to introduce you to Roz Oserin.
Roz, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
About 12 years ago I started to think about the things that I still wanted to accomplish.
One of them was painting. My grandfather who I met only briefly as a child was an artist, and I thought that this might be something that would be relaxing and fulfilling.
A friend recommended that I call Jack Jordon, then retired from teaching art at the local college. I took an oil painting lesson every Monday for 2 years from Jack. He recommended that I join the local art associations so I joined Foothills Art Association and East County Art Association. Belonging to these groups has enhanced my knowledge of all different types of art.
I’ve explored pastels, colored pencil, acrylic and watercolor by seeing demos from other artists and taking workshops. I continue to take online classes to enhance my knowledge, with watercolor as my primary focus right now and am a current member of San Diego Watercolor Society.
Two years ago the person that had been doing my framing told me that she was moving out of San Diego and when I asked her who I should go to for framing, she suggested that my husband Dan and I take over her business! It is amazing what can happen when a seed is planted… Dan and I opened Nainsook Framing + Art 6 months later on November 1, 2016.
We are primarily a custom framing store, serving the general public and local artists, but we couldn’t open this type of business without having art classes and a gallery too! We offer several types of art classes including Wine + Paint, Introductory Watercolor, Alcohol Ink and more, and we have a new showing of art by local artists every 8 weeks. It is my absolute pleasure to be spending time doing what I love to do and meeting others that love art too!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I generally paint scenes that in one way or another have meaning to me… landscapes from travel abroad and our own beautiful San Diego. I love to paint people and lately have been working on abstracts. I like to paint in the early morning when all is quiet and inspiration is at its peak for me. My life is busy with running our two business (my husband and I are also owners of Pret-a-Porter Salon & Spa for the last 20 years) and I find this special time relaxing and very important to my overall wellness.
My hope for the art that I create is that it should be beautiful and interesting, bringing the viewer back, again and again, to look for meaning and simple enjoyment.
I’m constantly striving to become a better artist and really searching now for the niche that will set my work apart from others. I’ve done several commission pieces for friends who had something or someone that was important to them and wanted to express it through a custom art piece.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Luckily, my focus on art has come at a time in my life when I’ve had another career for many years which financially supports it. I find that many artists that I’ve met are in the same situation.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
A comprehensive collection of my art is on my Facebook page, as well as I usually have a couple pieces at our gallery at Nainsook Framing + Art and at Foothills Art Association in La Mesa.
You can support my work by following on Facebook and sharing with friends and family, and by coming in for art classes at Nainsook. When thinking of decorating your home or office, think of shopping for local custom art instead of the commercial prints that are everywhere… It will likely be more expensive, but it will be something you will enjoy every day for a lifetime!
