Art & Life with Stephanie Rosie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Rosie.

Stephanie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve been a photographer for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I was always snapping away with little 35mm point and shoot cameras, capturing everything from school friends to vacations and summer camp. When I was 14, my dad gave me a Minolta x-700 as a birthday gift, and that’s when my love for photography really blossomed. I spent the next ten years documenting the hardcore music scene in Philadelphia. Capturing artists in their element continue to be a big theme in my work, but I shoot many different subjects now.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As a photographer, I am primarily a documentarian. I seek out moments, frame them in my viewfinder, and click the shutter. It sounds simple, but seeking out moments and capturing them through light and shadow is my life’s passion. I love telling a story through a single image. My main goal is to convey the intensity of each moment to the viewer. I want people to feel something when they look at my photographs.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I think the role of artists as commentators and interpreters of the world has remained the same throughout the ages. I think now more than ever we need to view everyone we encounter as a fellow human being who is doing the best they can with whatever situation they are in. I often use self-portraiture as a way of conveying this through my work. I try to normalize feelings of anxiety, fear, and sadness by sharing these vulnerable moments with an audience. We may not all share the same views, backgrounds, ideals, or stories, but by sharing our emotions, we can unite on common ground.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I’ll be showing some work at a group show at Safelight Labs in Cortez Hill on June 22. You can always find my work on Instagram (@stephanie.rosie) and my website where prints are available for purchase. I also have several photography zines in the works that will be available on my website later this summer.
