Art & Life with Summer Auman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Auman.

Summer, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My love of food and passion for freshness began as a child while covered in soil, picking and pruning in my grandmother’s garden. Meals around her table were always fresh, seasonal, and uncomplicated. I showcase that love for freshness and simplicity in my food to this day because food is so personal. It invokes a feeling, a memory, and a story. That’s why it is my personal mission to bring folks back to the table, without the stress of spending hours in the kitchen, so they too may have fond memories around the dinner table.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
In short, I feed hungry people. The long answer to “What do you do?” is, I am a professional personal chef who specializes in providing full-service meal preparation to everyday individuals like you & I using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. The art however really comes in the personalization of every meal. To achieve this, I sit down with my clients and learn about their eating habits and dietary requirements. In my kitchen, everyone is treated like family and understanding my client’s likes and needs are important when creating deliciously nutritious meals.

I do this because feeding others is my love language. In the restaurant industry, we rarely get to see our guests enjoying their meal. As a personal chef, I am able to have a more intimate connection with those I am serving. Seeing my guest enjoy a meal that was created solely for them is a feeling of nervousness and love all wrapped up one bite.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Like artwork, some of the best foods have come from times of setback, hardship, and doubt. Beer is just a bunch of grains meant for bread that accidentally got wet. Chocolate chip cookies were invented by a chef who couldn’t afford bakers chocolate. (Now I’m suddenly craving beer and chocolate chip cookies!)

Anyways, my point is don’t let financial hardship prevent you from doing what you love. Instead, let it inspire you to be creative. To create outside the box in a way that is unique to you. Make mistakes!
