Today we’d like to introduce you to Thao Huynh and Kolten French.
Thao and Kolten, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My boyfriend and I who are both artists are starting our first business venture together. We are building a niche mural painting company here in San Diego. We are the only ones doing what we’re doing here in all of California, maybe even in the US, based on my research so far.
We’ve been working on murals that have positive messages as well as playground murals that are bright/colorful with an educational element to them. We also create sensory art walks that help kids strengthen their cognitive skills. Our goal is to create meaningful public art to induce a feeling of joy and inspiration, encourage fitness and social play, and educate through artwork and brighten up drab looking spaces.
We got some exposure from PTOtoday.com on one of our sensory paths. See link here: https://www.ptotoday.com/pto-today-articles/article/8865-a-place-for-sensory-play.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
We create murals and sensory art walks for schools and public spaces. We paint everything by hand. Our product is meaningful and purposeful art. We are doing this because we wanted to become entrepreneurs in an industry that is very much against the grain of a 9-5 boring job and turn our lives into a creative and exciting one.
WE WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD THROUGH ART.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Artists have a greater responsibility through their talent to use it as a tool to inspire, communicate, address social or political issues, and to educate. We started doing what we are doing because of several reasons, but we felt it would be powerful to use our passion for art and visual story-telling to make a great impact and remind everyone that kindness, love, and beauty still exists in a world that seems so drab and hopeless.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can see our work through our Instagrams and social media pages. The best way we can be supported is through sharing our ideas and creation and booking us for mural work!
