We recently had the chance to connect with Caden Gilbert and have shared our conversation below.
Caden, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I think integrity is the most valuable thing someone can have. It’s important to be able to trust who you’re working with, and I always strive to make others feel like they can trust me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey, I’m Caden Gilbert!
I am a DJ and a guitar instructor with my family business, Gilbert Studios Music! I have been playing guitar for about 6 years now, having started in the summer of 2020 during the lockdown. And I’ve been DJing since the fall of 2021!
I am also a full-time student of music, currently studying at Grossmont College, where I perform with the Cadence Vocal Jazz Ensemble and with the Classical Guitar Ensemble.
In addition to work and school, I am also the worship director for my family’s church, Orchard Home Ministries! I also lead worship for various small groups around San Diego, and I often get invited to lead for different churches.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I’ve always had self-esteem issues, especially when it comes to my talents and what I have to offer. Especially as I child, I think I had trouble seeing myself as someone with potential.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I’ve always been held back by the fear of failure. Whether it’s in regard to my work, my personal life, or church, I get caught up with the “what ifs”. “What if I don’t do well?”, “What if they don’t like me?”, “What will I do if they say no?” I’ve been learning lately to ignore the “what ifs” and carry on anyway.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I think the person whom I admire the most as a musical influence is Ed Sheeran. He, in addition to being immensely talented, is such a kind person. I think he fits the bill when we mention integrity as well. I don’t see many pop stars or large names like him with the same humility and compassion that he has. It’s easy to admire him and his influence.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as loyal and trustworthy. One of the most important things to me and my work is being reliable; I want to leave behind that legacy.
