Carla Daniela of Hillcrest / Bankers Hill on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Carla Daniela shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Carla, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
I feel most loved every time a bride sends a heartfelt thank-you, leaves a glowing review, or shares a photo from her wedding day wearing the dress we worked on together. Seeing her radiant, confident, and joyful—it reminds me why I do what I do. It’s never just about the dress; it’s about helping her feel her most beautiful, most celebrated self on one of the most important days of her life.
One of the most meaningful experiences is when I get to repurpose a vintage wedding dress—especially one from the bride’s mother. Whether I’m redesigning the gown to make it more modern and in style, or tailoring it to fit like it was made just for the bride, those transformations are emotional for everyone. The joy and disbelief on the faces of both the bride and her mother when they see the updated dress—it’s truly special. It’s not just a gown; it’s a legacy being reimagined for a new chapter.
Do I believe I deserve that love? More than anything, I feel deeply grateful. I pour my heart, time, and expertise into every gown and every fitting. So when that love comes back—through a message, a smile, or a glowing review—it feels like a reflection of the care and passion I put into my work. It’s a beautiful reminder that creating happy brides doesn’t just transform dresses—it creates lasting memories, connects generations, and spreads a ripple of love and gratitude.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Carla, the founder and lead bridal tailor at Tailor Love in San Diego. I’ve been working with wedding dresses for over 20 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that when a bride feels incredible in her gown, everything else naturally falls into place. That insight inspired me to create Tailor Love—a space where brides feel genuinely supported, understood, and celebrated throughout their dress journey.
Our mission is simple and heartfelt: to create Happy Brides. That goes far beyond expert alterations—it’s about making sure every bride feels confident, beautiful, and completely herself. A perfect fit isn’t just about how a dress looks; it’s about how it feels. When a bride can move comfortably and feel secure, she radiates confidence.
Our vision is to offer a bridal tailoring experience that’s calm, personal, and joyful from the first fitting to the final try-on. Whether we’re making small adjustments or redesigning a cherished family heirloom, every detail matters. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the gown—it’s about helping each bride walk down the aisle feeling her absolute best. That’s what makes a Happy Bride, and that’s what Tailor Love is all about.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
One moment that deeply shaped how I see the world happened when I was a little girl, watching my grandmother sew. She didn’t work in fashion—she simply sewed out of love. Whether she was mending something for my grandfather or creating a piece for a family member, she did it with such care, patience, and pride.
That stayed with me. I realized, even as a child, that what we wear can deeply influence how we feel—our confidence, our energy, even how we show up in the world. And that when something is made with love, it carries a different kind of magic.
Today, through Tailor Love, I get to carry that early lesson forward. I bring that same intention and care to every bride I work with—because it’s not just about the gown. It’s about how she feels in it. My grandmother taught me to put love into every stitch, and that’s exactly what I do. That’s how we create Happy Brides.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Definitely—especially in the beginning. Starting out on my own was scary. I didn’t have a roadmap, and there were moments when the pressure and uncertainty made me question whether I could really do this. When you’re pouring your heart into something and not sure if it will work, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
But I discovered that the key isn’t to quit—it’s to adjust, adapt, and change. I learned to trust myself, shift what wasn’t working, and stay focused on why I started: to help brides feel confident, beautiful, and supported during one of the most important times in their lives.
Once I found my rhythm and started working with brides who truly connected with my vision, everything began to fall into place. Since then, the journey has been amazing. I’ve had the honor of working with so many wonderful women, and each one reminds me why I never gave up. I’m so grateful I kept going—because this work brings me joy every single day.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
At Tailor Love, the cultural value I protect above all else is respect for each bride’s individuality and story. Every bride who walks through our doors is unique—she brings her own vision, background, emotions, and dreams for her wedding day. My mission is to honor that, not just through expert tailoring, but through how I care for her throughout the process.
That’s where empathy plays such a powerful role. I approach every fitting with a deep understanding that this is more than just a dress—it’s a moment filled with meaning. By listening closely and being fully present, I can create a safe, supportive space where brides feel heard, valued, and at ease.
Empathy and respect go hand in hand. Together, they shape every interaction, every stitch, and every experience at Tailor Love—and they’re what help turn a beautiful dress into an unforgettable memory.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Absolutely. From a young age, I was drawn to the art of sewing and the way clothing can transform how someone feels about themselves. Watching my grandmother sew with love taught me that this work is about more than fabric—it’s about care, connection, and confidence.
Through Tailor Love, I’m living that legacy every day. Helping brides feel radiant and empowered on their wedding day feels deeply meaningful, and I truly believe this is what I was born to do. It’s not just a job or a craft—it’s a calling.
One of the most special parts of my work is giving vintage dresses new life—whether it’s redesigning a mother’s gown to fit today’s bride perfectly or carefully tailoring an heirloom to honor family history while making it fresh and wearable. Being part of that transformation is an honor, and it connects the past and present in such a meaningful way.
Every gown I tailor, every alteration I make, is part of a bigger story—a story of love, celebration, and transformation. Knowing that I play a role in one of the most important days in a bride’s life is a privilege I don’t take lightly.
So yes, I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, doing what I was born to do—and I’m excited to keep creating Happy Brides for years to come.
