Check out Abigail Peña’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Peña.

Abigail, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Tijuana and I’m 24 years old. I always knew I wanted to pursue a creative career, I always thought I wanted to study Visual Arts. As many of my peers, my parents though I was going to starve if I dedicated my life to the art industry, so the closest thing that made them & me happy was Graphic Design. When I finally went to college I realized what I really liked was the whole aspect of graphic design and everything it involved. At school I had many talented friends, friends that have way better drawing skills than me, so I never really tried drawing because I felt some kind of pressure around them, so I centered mostly on lettering and typography. When I finally decided to give a go at drawing I realized I really enjoyed it, and that I didn’t have to be a realistic kind of illustrator, that I could find my own style that suited best what I wanted to tell.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My work is in some extent, very personal work, I usually do it to get something out of my system, to vent, to let some things go and to remind myself some other things. My work is also very close to my friends, family and daily life, sometimes I like to draw problems or struggles my friends are having in hopes that I can be of some help or give some advice.

I think when it comes to illustration any little thing can become an inspiration, even a dumb or funny thing that happened to you along the day. I love illustrating those small moments to make people know they are not alone, no matter how big or small their struggle is.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I truly believe the role of an artist is really important in this day and time. I think we have a certain responsibility to communicate the issues that don’t get that much attention when maybe they should. Speaking for myself I’m very influenced in what happens in the world, in my country and city. My art is heavily influenced by political and social issues, especially feminist issues.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I post most and more constantly on my Instagram, but I also have a Facebook page in which I post different stuff sometimes
