Check out Alyssa Hobson’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Hobson.

Alyssa, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Growing up, I spent a lot of time day dreaming, playing make-believe in the backyard, reading and antique shopping with my Grandma. Skeleton keys were the earliest thing I ever collected. I always liked to imagine what exciting secrets they held, doors they opened, who they belonged to and what stories they told.

I always wanted to create stories, and when my father gave me his old Pentax at age 15, I finally had a way to tell those stories. Art school took me out of my comfort zone and pushed me into the world of digital photography. After a rough start, I found that digital photography gave me a whole new way to create my worlds.

While in art school, I met my husband who really helped me understand it was okay to use my voice and really express myself in my work. Today I work with a mix of film and digital, depending on what the project requires.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’ve always had an affinity for antiques, oddities and history. I’ve always been an old soul and it was only natural that my work reflects that.

I create stories. In my still life work I often take an object and try to imagine what it’s memories are and then try to create those. With my portraits I create a story for my characters.

My work consists of these key elements: a dream-like state. A tug or balance between light and dark. A sense of nostalgia, set somewhere between the past and a dream.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
If you can attend art classes, be that a 4-year institution or a class at a local community college do so! Being around other creatives in a working environment is wonderfully invigorating. Upon graduation, social media has been my savior. Facebook groups are a great way to connect with like-minded creators. Instagram is where I meet and get inspired by other artists; painters, illustrators, photographers, writers, fashion designers etc. What’s great about Instagram is it gives small artists a voice, a place to connect and follow like-minded creators.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Currently the best way to support my work is to view my website. I recently started a public Instagram for my work, and soon will be adding an online store where people can buy prints or commission work. I will also post any upcoming shows or exhibits on my Instagram.
