Today we’d like to introduce you to Antonio Becker.
Antonio, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Growing up in Cleveland, my mother was (and still is) an unbelievable painter, and my dad is a musician. It’s not so much that I was constantly around their work, or even realized the effect it had on me as it was fairly commonplace to see either one of them using they’re preferred medium to create art. I was never pushed too far into a “normal” career path and upon graduating high school moved to Brooklyn to learn more about graphic design, and to live with my sister who’s career is in fashion. After soaking up what I could there, and a brief stint back in Cleveland doing design work, I decided to come here to really test things, and see if the abnormal career path could work.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I paint and do some graphic design work, but my main creative outlet is creative direction and curating shows. I love the sense of belonging that everyone involved in a show is able to have, that inspires me in a big way. The pride, a person, feels seeing their art on a wall. It’s beautiful to play a small part in that for people. I hope if nothing else that people see that they can do it too if you can think of it, you can make it, and it’s worth pursuing and making it happen.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Don’t close yourself off and get involved in the community. If you’re interested in a show or event, by all means, go to it. If you think someone’s work is sick, let them know. The only way to get out is to be out, and usually, people are much nicer than you’d expect.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
If you’re interested in seeing our work, please come to Good Friday Gallery, in the east village area of San Diego. As one of the owners of the gallery, each show is a reflection of us, and the space itself is like a canvas in that way. Best way to support us is by coming to the shows!
