Check out Bren Monlux’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bren Monlux.

Bren, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started painting, sculpting and making other art as an escape from a stressful marriage. I can also thank that marriage for allowing me the time to take art classes at the community college. They say an artist is developing their talents all of their lives by their experience, what they see and how it affects them. It’s always been a passion, that I finally took the time to develop in my late 40s.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I currently paint contemporary figurative work. I find myself drawn now to those who commune in nature. It brings a sense of calm and leads to freedom of the mind. If I had the resources, I would spend all of my time sculptings. I look for ways to wrap my fingers around the form by adding the illusion of depth with different media such as mirrors, foil, glass, and metal leaf.

I’ve put together two series that you can view on my website. My Fluid series was put together mostly with oil and some egg tempera. It has a watercolor look with the drips and bleeding. They are loose moody figures. The energy of the mood is expressed with how the paint is flowing.

My Modern Woman series explores ideas of what it means to be a woman now. Some images are surreal; some are meditative, This series is littered with mixed media. The paintings jump from pastels to oil and egg tempera. I try to find ideas and images that strike me as profound to paint. Hopefully, it speaks to some. I like to explore and evolve ideas, wondering where it will all lead…

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
The more you look, the more you see. So, often we get caught up with what is in front of us. Playing and moving our medium around. If we want to make a representational piece, we have to look and measure shape and value constantly. Ask yourself what you are trying to present to your audience. This becomes your “voice.”

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
