Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Blake.
Brian, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always been fascinated with the ability to freeze time and capturing the moment through the world of photography. Learning how a camera works and the technical settings was very challenging at the start, but I knew for some reason that this was my path. Since I was young I always remember looking through a photo album to see how the world around us how changed or stayed the same. With photography I have found my own world which I can journey into creating images and presenting the world as I see it. Like most photographers my first self-assignments were taking pics of nature and capturing endless sunsets at the beach, but when I started photographing athletes and learning what makes them tic I was instantly hooked. I soon found through just asking a few simple questions, I could learn how to photograph these people to show who they really are. We all have many sides of our lives, work, play, love, fight, etc. Through my portraits I wish to show all of them.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As a photographer I wish to show through portraits our true strengths and desires. Many times, we are defined by what we do for a living or by our worldly possessions, but with photography I wish to show the true person. I tend to choose a setting that would best suit the subject/model/talent. I have always loved dark and muted backgrounds for the subject, leaving very little to distract from the eye. Portraits should be simple or complex as they need be. I hope to show the subject that they are stronger and more beautiful than they ever imagined, for some reason we are unhappy with the way we see ourselves, often doubting how beautiful we really can be.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Going to local art shows or photo exhibits is a good starting point. Look around and see who is in your field of interest and reach out to them to see if they ever need assistance in an upcoming project. I have found that I always need helps in projects, so you have to help to get sometimes. Mentor a younger artist if you can, you may learn more about yourself than you teach them.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
