Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalia Cervantes Bonifaz.
Dalia, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Lima, Peru and moved to the states in 2008 when I was 19 years old. I lived in Florida and Washington state before settling in San Diego and have been loving it here for the past seven years. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved creating things and always had a very vivid imagination. I believe that combined with my outside of the box thinking and my will to make it on my own here in the states put me in the path of eventually creating my business.
I have worked in the restaurant industry since I came to the states which have helped me hone my outgoing personality and develop my customer service skills making me the social Dragonfly, I am today 🙂 I love beer! Mostly, if it’s craft and it’s made locally because I love supporting small businesses run by passionate people who care.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have always enjoyed making things with my own hands, but it wasn’t until a friend of mine asked me to teach him how to make a Dreamcatcher for his daughters that I realized that there was a demand. I tend to be very critical of my work but ever since I started drinking craft beer, I noticed I was more relaxed while creating and since there are so many local breweries, I figured it would be a good idea to host a workshop at one of them and include a beer with the ticket purchase to help people get their creative juices flowing.
My first workshop was on how to make a Dreamcatcher and I hosted it at Thorn St Brewery. The event was such a success everybody kept asking when was the next one going to be so I decided to come up with a new craft and host it at a different brewery. Over a year I have hosted several public workshops at various breweries as well as private craft parties and corporate team building events. I have five crafts I have been rotating, and I just added a Christmas focused workshop on how to make a Macramé Christmas tree coming up on December 11th at Culture Brewing in Ocean Beach.
I also host a couple of experiences on Airbnb, two different crafts both held at Kilowatt Tasting Room in Ocean Beach. Out of towners love creating something they can take home to remember their time here in San Diego, and they also get to try San Diego craft beers while at it, so it’s a win-win. I love being able to inspire people to use their hands to create and also give them a safe and fun way to socialize while helping them expand their knowledge of San Diego craft beer.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Social media presence. Sometimes it gets hard to keep up with it while still focusing on creating new things and that is when multitasking needs to come into play. If it does get overwhelming, I allow myself a short break to recharge then go back at it again.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
