Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Zamora.
Emily, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story really begins much like other photographers- starting young with taking photos on a very basic point and shoot camera, growing that into a hobby, and now trying to make that hobby a career. Where I believe my story varies from the others is why I had that obsession with my first point and shoot- because I come from a family with a history of dementia and memory loss in general. For me, I wanted to take pictures of my food, what I was wearing that day, the places I went – to remember. I realize that my images mainly are used now to document a perfect day or a perfect setting to display on Instagram or Facebook, but I really hope that at their core they are used to freeze a moment in time to be enjoyed again and again forever.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a lifestyle and portrait photographer based in Southern California (moved back to Los Angeles a couple years ago to be exact but I travel throughout southern CA). I love getting to document special moments in people’s lives whether that be their engagement, wedding, or even their growing family. I love doing this because it’s playing a small part in giving my clients a way to remember- how they looked, how they interacted, how they FELT. I’m by no means the best of the best out there, definitely not the most artistic photographer around, but I’m pretty proud of how I’ve developed and where I’m headed with my photography!
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Buy what you need to start out, rent what you can’t afford until you can afford it, and (like many struggling artists) fake it till ya make it and work with what ya got!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now I post most frequently to my Instagram- @simplywanderingphoto, but I have a small portfolio website and Facebook page too!
