Today we’d like to introduce you to Francesca Woomer.
Francesca, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My love of photography started at a young age. My mom is from Honduras and barely has any photos of herself or her family earlier than age 10 for her. So when my brother and I were born, she made sure we had lots of photos and memories. My dad would use his old Polaroid for special occasions like Christmas and birthdays, and we loved the disposable film cameras. But I took my first fancy camera over to Europe when I studied abroad in college and started playing around with the settings. When my husband got stationed in Hawaii, and we moved there, I had a blast exploring the island with my mom’s old DSLR. That was when friends started asking me to take their photos, and I just fell in love with it! I love making people smile and hearing how much it means to have tangible memories of the people they love after I deliver a gallery means the world to me!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m an adventurous couples and elopement photographer. I’m all about capturing the unique and authentic love between couples. My husband and I had a blast taking our engagement photos, and that’s really when I figured out photography could be fun and different than just posing in a studio. My inspiration is driven by the couples themselves. I want my clients to be able to remember not only getting great photos but having fun and getting to love on their spouse or fiancé. Basically having me third wheel a date with them. I always tell my couples to focus on each other, forget I’m there, and that makes them more comfortable in front of the lens, especially with a stranger pointing a huge camera at their face! If they can look back on their photos and remember how in love they were/are, how much fun they had, and maybe got to experience a new location thats out of this world or have a funny story to tell from it, it helps me give them an experience and an awesome memory to look back on! Being able to spread joy to others gives me joy! Photography to me shouldn’t be about faking everything or making everything look perfect. My style is capturing the authentic and raw moments of peoples lives. Capturing those in-between moments that we remember, but seldom document visually.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think life has become easier and harder for artists! The internet has really changed the game for marketing and spreading the word. But because there are so many of us out there, you can sometimes get lost. I think it’s awesome that more and more creatives are putting themselves out there and sharing their gifts with the world! But because marketing strategies continually change, we as artists have to step up our game to put ourselves out there. It takes effort, but even when you have one really good client, its all worth it! Exactly what SD Voyager is doing is fantastic for the artist community! Spread the word! Word of mouth is always a very strong reference and being seen is great. So cities just need to show their support by helping us get the word about us out there!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can find my work on my website, Instagram, and Facebook! As a photographer, most of my support comes from my followers/social media. So liking, commenting, sharing, and letting me know what you think always helps! All my info is available here:
