Check out Joanne Geroe’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Geroe.

Joanne, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
The beauty and light of southern California is a joy to paint. I am primarily a painter of landscapes. The coast, lagoons, and hills of San Diego are often my subjects. I also enjoy composing small still life paintings. Bright, cheerful colors and a loose alla prima style define my paintings. Over the years my family has lived in many parts of the US from the east coast to the west – and points in between. Each location has influenced my painting. No matter where I have lived, I have consistently painted and studied art, including at The Art League of Alexandria Virginia, The Smithsonian, The Kansas City Art Institute and Watts Atelier in Encinitas, California. I find and paint the beauty in the “everyday” – to me it’s the grandeur wrapped up in the mundane that gives us a glimpse of what is most essential.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love exploring San Diego, composing my paintings from scenes of our beautiful city. Working plein air (outdoors on site) allows me to fully experience a location, and observe how it changes with the time of day, the cloud cover, the influx of people – a whole variety of factors that can not be captured any other way. My small plein air oil paintings, watercolor sketches, and drawings inform larger pieces I work on in the studio. The theme of my work revolves around being present in the moment – and enjoying the visual harmony and variety of San Diego’s amazing surroundings.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
As an artist, I define success by my willingness to continually explore my artistic limits and challenge and reframe my skills in order to meet the vision of art I have in my head. I feel that being a successful artist requires a willingness to self-evaluate one’s work and continually strategize new methods and techniques.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
