Today we’d like to introduce you to Kajsa Piatt.
Kajsa, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always loved making art and I started drawing when I was very young. It has always been a sort of escape from the world; I could sit down with a pen and paper and just get into the zone and lose track of time and space. For me painting and drawing are forms of meditation or therapeutic practice. I decided to study Graphic Design in college although I really enjoy the fine-art side of it the best. I moved to San Diego from Wisconsin about four years ago and have no intentions of moving back.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I really enjoy spontaneous art-making. I enjoy sitting down and allowing my hand to do whatever it wants. I am usually inspired by people- different noses, eyes, mouth shapes. I have been really enjoying creating somewhat abstract faces. My favorite medium to use is watercolor and micron pens. I feel art is a way to express feelings we may not even recognize we are feeling and it allows for a subconscious to show itself. My art is a lot of that- feelings coming out that I didn’t reflect upon until it is on paper.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
It is really hard to balance work and practice or getting work that values your practice. I have been searching for the right graphic design position that would utilize more of the raw fine artwork in their corporate designs. I think that style is getting popular again so hopefully the market improved. There isn’t enough demand for artwork, and for those who do freelance we aren’t getting paid enough to keep up a personal business.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have a website kajsapiatt.squarespace.com and an Instagram @dinosaurjerky – feel free to follow me. I am working on setting up an online shop to sell the plethora of artwork I have piling up in storage. I would love to sell my work- so feel free to contact me about custom pieces or to buy any I have shared online.
