Check out Karli Cadel’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karli Cadel.

Karli, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always loved telling stories through art. I grew up in San Diego, California, where I was immersed in the performing arts by age eight. I later received my Associate of Arts degree in photography from Grossmont College, and my bachelor’s degree in theatre arts from San Diego State University. It was not until a photography internship at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts that I discovered I could combine both of my fields of study, using the power of a camera to capture and share stories of the artistic process across all performing arts disciplines. Shortly after my internship I traveled to New York City, where I studied at the School of Visual Arts and received my Masters of Professional Studies in Digital Photography.

For the past eight years I have been the company photographer for The Glimmerglass Festival, an internationally renowned summer opera and musical theatre festival in Cooperstown, New York. In addition, I have photographed for: San Diego Opera, Cygnet Theatre, MOXIE Theatre, Apollo Theater, New York Festival of Song, Miller Theatre at Columbia University, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Curtis Institute of Music, and The New York Times Arts section. Theatre, dance, opera, and music continue to shape and inspire my vision as a professional photographer today. My experience as a performing arts photographer led me to find my passion for wedding photography. The joy I find in documenting the moments and detail of a wedding day, each and every one unique, is equal to that of capturing a story on stage. I have been fortunate enough to document love stories of all kinds from coast to coast.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love making photos of people, performance, and events. It’s important to me to document the action and emotion of what is happening in an organic way, as well as capture the details of what I am photographing. No story that comes before my camera is the same, which is one of the many reasons I love my job! Every subject I photograph is unique, and I believe in creating images that reflect the experience of what is before me.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I believe the role of an artist cannot be defined. The work of an artist is personal not only to the creator, but those who engage with the art. I’m fortunate in my work documenting the performing arts to preserve moments on stage that have the power to remind an audience of events and issues that directly or indirectly affect themselves, or members of their community, and connect them through a shared experience.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
