Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Hudson.
Kathryn, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Hello! I am from a small town in central Mississippi. I was always interested in art from an early age but my high school didn’t have a program. I would drive to the state capitol Jackson once a week to take life drawing lessons. The teachers from those classes went on to become the chair of Belhaven University’s art program, so I followed him there. Belhaven is a small Presbyterian college in Jackson Mississippi. I graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Art.
From there I decided I wanted to go into illustration, so I went straight into the graduate program of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah Georgia and received my Masters of Illustration. After that I proceeded to move back to Mississippi and worked retail for several years with small freelance jobs. My husband and I wanted a change of pace, so we move to Atlanta in 2013. I was working retail and we found a life drawing class to attend to keep up our skills. I met an artist there who worked at Floyd County Productions, on the animated show Archer. He told me about a character design test, I took it, and was hired! I worked there for two years and then was offered a character design position at Warner Brothers Animation in LA this past November. So, we moved out here and are enjoying LA!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have many different influences and am interested in many different mediums! I make my living as a character designer, freelance illustrator, and comic book artist. I am currently working on a comic for Macmillian Publishing and last year I did the art for the Dream Works Trolls comics. I make art that graphic, often simplistic, and hopefully striking. One of my main interest is the play of color in my work. People often remark on my color palettes. I like to use color in a unique and charming way.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Using social media effectively. It is so easy to promote yourself but a lot of artists have trouble with it. Also, artists tend to undervalue themselves, I know I have in the past.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
