Check out Laurie Larson’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Larson.

Laurie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve been obsessed with taking photos as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, I went to an “adventure camp” during the summer. Each week, my parents would buy me a disposable camera and they’d bring it to the drug store the following weekend to develop my photos. I would get so excited to look through the memories I’d captured and I’d place all of my photos into various albums that I kept stashed under my bed. As I grew up, I always had a digital camera around my wrist until cell phones took over, but I continued to constantly take photos of everything and anything. As an adult, I went to the store to buy a GoPro in preparation for a backpacking trip. I ended up buying a Canon introductory level DSLR and that was the start of my true obsession!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a lifestyle photographer. I am not as focused on the “posed” moments as I am with the in between. I live to capture authentic moments that show the connection between people. Whether that’s a father and his child, a mother and her soon to be born child who’s still living inside of her, or a madly in love couple. I want my images to feel raw and powerful and above all else, I want to make the viewer feel something. I want to capture emotion in a way that twenty years from now, my subject can look back on their images and be transported to a time long past and feel those emotions all over again just as strong as they were in the original moment.

Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think the biggest challenge is finding a way to stand out from the crowd. There are so many amazing artists in the world and that is especially true here in San Diego. It’s so important to find your “why” and figure out what drives you to create the art that you envision in your mind and follow that as far as it will take you. Let your passion bleed through into your work because that is what will make you stand out in a world that’s just bursting with talent and beauty.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work can be viewed on my website, www.laurieashleyphotography.com or my much more frequently updated Instagram, @laurieashleyphotography. People can support my work by liking my posts when they see something that catches their eye and sharing my work for others to see as well!
