Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesley Ramirez .
Lesley , we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
As a child, I enjoyed sketching portraits of family members and looking at comics in the newspaper. I had piles of notebooks with random sketches and comics. I’m an only child, so I spent a lot of time alone as a kid, which I appreciated since I am a true introvert at heart. It wasn’t until my 6th grade art class that I realized I was pretty good at this art thing. My art projects would always end up on display all throughout my high school years. I attended FIDM and graduated with a degree in Visual Communications. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up doing much with my degree and got distracted with mundane retail jobs and too much partying. I slowly began drawing and painting again as a hobby. It wasn’t until last year that I decided to get serious and make this my side hustle. I’m currently working a 9-5 desk job and making time to illustrate with hopes of becoming a full time artist one day.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My style consists of botanical illustrations, sacred geometry, mandala and ornamental designs. I use a lot of precise line work and dot work for technique with fine liner pens. I like using a lot of black but also like to make my designs feel delicate and/or feminine at the same time. I get very inspired by the tattoo industry and look up to a lot of tattoo artists that have a similar style to mine. My main inspiration however, comes from nature and life in general. I want my art to represent the sacred oneness of life. I feel that we are all here for a reason and have our own unique gifts to share with the world.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I feel that true success is being consistent and not giving up even when one person is following you. Being an artist can be frustrating at times. We all have those bad days where our art doesn’t turn out as planned but the goal is to learn from it, move on and start fresh the next day. You have to enjoy the process just as much as the destination
