Check out Lori Barnett’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Barnett.

Lori, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My artistic journey started later in life by attending a paint night event. I didn’t have any idea how to paint and my experience that night sparked something in me. I went to 4 more of those events and realized that I had some natural talent. I began playing around with other mediums and did some art journaling. In the beginning I really just played around and everything I did, I loved. I even got a couple of commissions.

I decided to take classes and learn some techniques and skills. I noticed the “play” part started to go away and the inner critic emerged. I started to judge everything I did against what I saw everyone else doing. That felt so different than when I started and I sort of lost my mojo for a while.

Eventually I picked up the paints and started to play again.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I use mixed media to create pieces that are whimsical and childlike. I often get told I should do a children’s book.

I love to create pieces for other people and I love to paint whimsical fun images that make me smile. I also like to put words and phrases on my pieces.

I am also a holistic health practitioner who works with “inner child” issues so I like to bring that part of my life into my art with reminders of love and magic. I want people to be reminded of their true nature when they look at my art.

I often say if my 10 year old self is doing the creating I am on the right track and will create something I am happy about.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think conditions are great for artists because of the internet and all the ways we can promote and show our work. I think San Diego is a great place for art and artists.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now they can see my work on Facebook and Instagram. They can support me by following, liking and commenting.
