Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Hill.
Mark, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always been thoroughly engaged by creativity, but it wasn’t until fairly recently that I realized that I wanted to do it professionally, or at the very least to such a constant degree. In fact, I made it a point to take on alternative paths in school in order to protect this thing that I enjoyed so much. However, I ultimately switched gears part of the way through college and earned my BFA in Illustration from CSULB.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am very invested in many different mediums of art. I primarily do pen and ink illustrations and graphic design for work, but also love doing plein air watercolor paintings, pencil sketches, and way up there is probably printmaking. I am a big admirer of creative processes and getting lost in them, and printmaking offers just that environment.
I also really enjoy film and have been filming and editing videos since I was a kid. The process of film is much like printmaking to me in that I very easily find myself spending entire days happily lost in these little steps that shape the final product.
Ultimately what I think I find in art, and what I wish to offer others through my work, is an appreciation for our surroundings. I typically like to draw the things I observe or reconstruct a moment through film all in an effort to reflect a little bit longer on a respective moment.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I define artistic success as enjoying the process as much as the final work of art, and to create something that you can stand behind. I believe that is the most rewarding approach to art and therefore the most successful.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I periodically do exhibitions but do not currently have any coming up. However, I have a website. I just recently updated that includes some select illustrations, graphic design, and videos I have made. I also have an Instagram that I consistently post new work to, and is largely a portfolio for me.
Following these accounts, and staying updated on when exhibitions take place is a great way to support my work, and also serves as a great means of correspondence to work on collaborative pieces.
