Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Khein.
Michael, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story started during a random bath time with my daughter. I say that because, I had just recently bought a new camera to take photos of our new born. My wife and I were getting ready for bath for my daughter Addison. I thought it would be cool to make a quick video testing out the quality and features of my new camera. I made a quick two-minute-long cinematic video of my bath during her bath, set it to music, color corrected it, and added some cheesy transitions. I posted it on Facebook and that’s when everything started to take off. My friends and family started to say you should make more videos and I wanted the practice so I made a film of us at the zoo, at Disney Land, and just about anywhere fun we ventured.
My wife Genna is a professional hair and makeup artist, and has been in the wedding field for years. I thought to myself… how hard could it be. All you need to do is film the bride coming down the aisle, don’t miss the kiss, and capture some dance moves. I posted on Instagram that I was looking for a couple who was getting married soon and would like a video for free. I had some people respond but their weddings were for six months to a year. A friend of mine said he knew a couple who was getting married soon and said they will book me. When this became official, I right away started to panic because I was watching some wedding videos online and instantly regretted my thoughts of how easy it should be.
I showed up to the wedding hours before I should have. I had a note on my phone of all the detail shots I wanted to achieve though out the day. I think I ended up only completing a one or two of those actual shots. I was so afraid of missing a detail that I filmed every tiny little bit. In doing so, one of the first lessons I learned was that batteries don’t last that long. I kept having to change my battery in-between major moments once it died. Long story short. I filmed the bride coming down the aisle, I didn’t miss the kiss, and captured some awesome dance moves. Everything I do today I learned from my successes and failures of my first wedding video.
I am now about years full-time into wedding videography. I have filmed over 75 weddings, worked with companies such as Red Bull, and Apple, and still make small home films of my daughter when we go out.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a film maker specializing in wedding films. I create everlasting memories for couples on the biggest day of their life. It’s the most rewarding feeling when I hear my couple’s reaction to their film. My message I want to share with anyone looking to get into this field is DO IT! Start small at a birthday party or some event, post it online and get to work. Some people will say that the wedding business is saturated and you won’t get any work. I think the complete opposite. All you need is that one video that someone shares and one of their friends see is and books you, then one of their friends see it and books you, and next thing you know you’ll be turning down business because you are too busy.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I do feel the role of wedding videography has slowly changed over time. Nowadays more and more local and international filmmakers are making wedding videos into proper cinematic films. The type of skill out there is extremely motivating and makes this job never stagnate and always keeping me on my feet. My goal in life is to change people’s mindset on wedding videography and get out of their heads the old school 80’s-90’s way of wedding videos with static, no storyline, boring wedding videos.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
