Check out Michelle Skyrud Novak’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Skyrud Novak.

Michelle Skyrud, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in San Diego, CA. I grew up an ocean and art lover in Pacific Beach. I went to school for fashion design and was designing custom wedding dresses for work. For fun, I took a class on mosaic art and fell in love with the process of piecing together custom works of art in glass tile. I switched my focus from fashion design to art and I have found joy in the tile zone of mosaic art ever since.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create mosaic art on surfboards, pieces of wood, table tops, and other hard surfaces. I cut small pieces of glass, glue them down, and grout them into ocean themed or nature themed designs. I create because it soothes my soul and helps me navigate through the ups and downs of this life. Creating art is a steady anchor in my life and it brings me great joy. I want to share that joy with the world. I hope people feel a little of that joy when viewing my artwork. The message or inspiration is beauty in nature, attention to detail, valuing the earth and all its majesty, and the power of color.

Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think the biggest challenge facing artists today is finding a way to reach a customer base and not letting the demands of that customer base overtake your own personal creative path or inspiration. You want to connect with people and share your work, but you don’t want marketplace demands to overtake your own important creative freedom of expression. As artists we need to steer the ship of our own artistic expression.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can view my artwork online at www.michelleskyrudnovak.com or on my Instagram page @mookiesushi. People can support my work with encouraging words, checking out my Instagram @mookiesushi, purchasing a piece on my website, or placing a custom order for a one-of-a-kind mosaic.
