Check Out Alegra Loewenstein’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alegra Loewenstein.

Alegra Loewenstein

Hi Alegra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like so many other folks, my personal and professional journey has been full of ups and downs and twists and turns. I’ve always dabbled in a lot of different interests. I studied ecology then writing, worked in science education, then had kids and started working for myself (both of those being particularly full of ups/downs/twists/turns!) The highlights of working for oneself include the ability to learn a lot of new skills and pursue a variety of passions. The lowlights of working for oneself would primarily be those ups and downs I keep referring to! I’ve ended up with a two-fold business. On the one hand, I work for a handful of amazing and inspiring clients who themselves work in science and business. I write grants for them, and I collaborate with them on their other writing needs, such as. On the other hand, I have self-published six books on nature-inspired health and wellness, through a spiritual lens, and I have several more writing projects in the works. That description may not make much sense, but I view our relationship with our body as parallel to our relationship with the earth. I hope we can come back and dig into this topic later!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life has a way of always throwing unexpected challenges to all of us along the way. I’d say that all of the normal life challenges I was experiencing in life were magnified by the lockdowns and social disruptions of 2020 and beyond. My kids were young at the time, throwing our family into a new dynamic. Also, a lot of my clients before 2020 included professional speaking to some degree, and, so, their businesses were de-railed, which pushed out their need for writing and editing support. I had to reassess at that point. I have previous experience with grant writing, and I ended up going in that direction with several of my clients who are medical and biological researchers, which has been rewarding to help them fund some pretty amazing research.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My personal writing projects are also inspired by science, although maybe not in the traditional sense. As I’ve mentioned, I see a parallel between how we relate to our bodies and how we relate to the earth. When we connect with one, we connect with the other. When we are drawn to care for one, we are drawn to care for the other. There is a natural and holistic connection between our bodies and the earth. My books don’t necessarily build that dynamic explicitly, rather they are based on that assumption. So, I have a wide variety of books, guided journals, and card decks that help us connect to our bodies and the earth, which also coincides with trusting ourselves and building up our intuition. I have books on some of the basics of looking at health holistically and starting with how we eat (and to some extent what we eat, though most people know that, so it’s not my focus). And then I expand from there into looking at how to connect with and heal our inner child, how to look at our body’s aches and pains as metaphorical messages, how to build a functioning home to support our health and well-being, and more. I really focus on helping busy people slow down to connect with their inner wisdom through tiny rituals and mini mindfulness practices. It’s fun! You should check some of my books out!!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I don’t know that “environmental spirituality/health/mindfulness” is necessarily an industry, and I hope it never becomes one. Honestly, there is too much commodification of health and wellness at this point, and I don’t want to get in on a million products, but rather I hope that the tools I create – the books, journals, and decks – help people simplify and trust themselves without needing a million products.

However, the industry of writing books and journals is still shifting from the previous dominant force of large-scale publishing houses controlling the content to individuals creating and marketing their own content. I don’t see this going away anytime soon, but I do hope I can join the de-influencer trend that helps de-couple selling a million products via affiliate links from the content and primary messaging. My main goal is to write books, journals, decks, and give people a lot of value in a simple tool that can help them build the life they want. I personally love books for this reason – I can get access to an amazing idea or expert advice for the price for a couple cups of coffee, and I can apply it in my life. Books are amazing!
