Check Out Amy Nesbitt’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Nesbitt.

Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in San Diego, then went to college in the SF Bay Area where I stayed (until recently) to start my corporate career at Apple, where I was for the last 18 years. During that time I met my husband, had two multicultural kids, and during COVID decided to be the crazy lady that added more to her plate.

I started a Youtube channel called “Flashes of Joy” at the time to help our family focus on the good not the hard because we had so many blessings and amazing moments even if life looked really different from what we knew pre-pandemic. The channel shifted into what is now “This Japanese American Life” because as a daughter of immigrants from Japan, I always had so many people ask me my travel, culture, and food recipe recommendations to make life simpler for people, especially parents raising multicultural kids. I got even crazier by adding a food Instagram inspired by a coworker who started one, because food has always been part of my childhood and DNA. I love it, took pictures, and thought hey why not do food and travel?

As I spoke with so many working moms about how the heck I do all these things while being a full time corporate worker in Sililcon Valley as well as a wife and mom, I realized I love this creative outlet where I was also able to help others through it. Thus, my call toward Whole Wellness Mamas and the Whole Wellness Mamas summit was born – to help moms thrive instead of survive because I truly believe every person, especially moms, deserves to feel whole in every stage of motherhood. I also LOVE books of all genres so I may have started a Booktok/Book YouTube channel too. I don’t take myself too seriously, I have fun doing it, and I absolutely LOVE sharing travel tips, products, food spots, books, and parenting strategies to encourage every parent to find joy in parenthood.

Through all this, our family made the hard decision to move to San Diego to change up life and not raise kids in the hectic Silicon Valley life. So here we are doing all the things and trying to live in alignment with our family’s values! I hope it inspires other parents to live in alignment with what they want for themselves and their families too!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Has it been easy? Absolutely not!
There have been so many times where I compare myself to others – Youtubers or mom entrepreneurs that started around the same time, or earlier, and beat myself up for how much less I’ve grown. When they say comparison is the thief of joy, it is 100% true! I know I try to do a lot on my part time hours and I need to narrow down my focus… but boy, do I love what I do, and the variety I have.  I also look back and see all the amazing opportunities and people that have come into my life because I just said to myself “maybe I’ll try it” and DID IT. That makes me so excited for what is still to come. I have stopped comparing less, but instead learn from what they’re doing well and apply what I can to my own journey,
At the end of the day, I’m following my heart and my call, which is to help moms thrive instead of survive in every way that I can. That can look like sharing ways to find joy in every day by giving cooking tips, mom hacks, book talks/recs, travel tips, or just being authentic in my #momlife struggles (and possible solutions) in this world full of highlights on socials! The beauty is my kids see all this too, they join in to help with the business in whatever ways they can, and I would absolutely journey down this path again if I started over. My journey doesn’t look like anybody else’s because I am not like anybody else. I’m embracing what makes me unique, what I bring to the table, and finding my own people.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

After almost two decades in the corporate world of Silicon Valley, our family made a big, bold life change move back to my hometown of San Diego even if it meant job changes. I’m still working full time in a different corporate world, but our family is always reviewing and discussing whether we feel like we are living in alignment with our life priorities.

My YouTube channel and ways to help moms thrive are my COVID babies and I can’t wait to spend more time on them and see them grow. “This Japanese American Life” is also a way to pass on the Japanese culture side to my half Japanese kids so I’m excited for the ways I get to have them learn and we experience new things side by side. I hope that all of it is beneficial to people interested in Japanese things and parents all around the world, especially fellow multicultural ones trying to balance all the things. You are not the only one trying to do it all, and I hope my videos, summits, and courses are just a small way to help families thrive.

You can find me in a lot of places depending on what you’re looking for – I put together free virtual summits for moms (one is coming up shortly!), have courses to help moms find the time for THEM, and have a YouTube channel, website and podcast to share all kinds of tips, resources, and fun for free! I share my passion for wellness, travel, books, and eats as “WholeWellnessMamas” on my blog as well as Instagram and TikTok. If you love books of any genre, I seriously was a crazy lady that added ANOTHER Youtube for my (our family’s) love of books so come chat with me at “AmyNsReads”!

I’m not saying do as much as me, but don’t be afraid to say “yes” to some fun stuff and see what opportunities open up!

Any big plans?

I am looking forward to a lot more great YouTube content that most of all helps make others’ lives easier, interviewing people making a difference in this world to help parents, and who knows, I’d love to be working with parents/content creating full time in the future!
