Check Out Brandon Hale’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Hale.

Hi Brandon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was self-taught, and some of my earliest memories are sketching in my notebook on long road trips with my parents to visit family in Birmingham, Alabama. I drew through middle school, junior high, and high school, but when I joined the Navy at 19, I had to put art on hold.

I served for 20 years, and near the end of my career, something in me reignited. I picked up my pencils again and drew a portrait of my son and daughter. That moment reconnected me to something I had always loved. As I looked for more reference material, I came across hyper-realism — artwork so detailed it looks like a photograph. To challenge myself, I created a portrait of Nipsey Hussle after he passed, posted it online, and to my surprise — it sold. That one moment gave me the confidence to pursue art seriously.

A few milestones have made a major impact on my journey. In 2022, I entered the San Diego County Exhibition of Fine Art and placed 3rd — a feat I repeated in 2023. In 2024, I earned 1st place, and in 2025 I was honored as the brochure’s cover artist and received the prestigious Coordinator’s Award. These recognitions affirmed that my work resonates. But along the way, I’ve faced challenges too — one of the biggest being learning to value my time and talent, especially in commission work. It’s taught me the importance of respecting the craft and the dedication it demands.

Right now, I’ve been blessed with steady commission work, which I’m grateful for. But I’m also at a point where I’m reassessing the kind of work I take on, so I can rebuild my portfolio and make sure it reflects who I’ve become as an artist. I’ve grown tremendously, and I want my portfolio to showcase that evolution. Art is more than just a product for me — it’s my mental break, a place of connection, and the emotional reactions I get from clients remind me why I do this.

Looking ahead, my dream is to have my own solo exhibit or even open a gallery — one where I can leave a legacy that outlives me. And one day, I’d love to share that space with my kids. They all draw, and honestly, I believe they’ll be even better than me. Seeing them create fills me with pride, and if they choose this path too, I want to help pave the way for them.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road — but I think that’s part of what makes the journey meaningful. One of the biggest struggles has been learning how to value my work and set boundaries, especially when it comes to pricing commissions. In the beginning, I just felt grateful that people wanted my art, so I undervalued my time and effort. But as I’ve grown, I’ve realized the importance of protecting both my energy and the integrity of my craft.

Another challenge has been balancing the mental and emotional demands of being an artist. Art is healing for me — it helps me process and escape — but when it becomes a full-time job, that line can get blurry. Staying creative while also managing expectations, deadlines, and personal growth takes real discipline.

And like many artists, I’ve also faced moments of doubt — wondering if I’m good enough, if I’m progressing fast enough, or if people will connect with my work. But each time I push through that, it makes me stronger and more confident in my purpose.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a realism artist specializing in charcoal and graphite, with a focus on hyper-realism — creating drawings that are so detailed they can be mistaken for photographs. I primarily do portrait work, often capturing people, moments, and expressions that hold deep emotional meaning. What I’m most known for is my ability to bring emotion through texture and tone — people often tell me they feel something when they look at my work, whether it’s a sense of connection, memory, or reflection.

I think what sets me apart is the intention I put behind every piece. I don’t just aim to replicate a photo — I want to capture the essence of a person. I study their eyes, their expression, the subtle shadows — not just to get it “right” technically, but to breathe life into it. Also, being self-taught and coming from a completely different background — 20 years in the Navy — brings a unique perspective. I didn’t follow a traditional art path, which means everything I do is rooted in pure passion, discipline, and a lot of self-motivation.

One of the things I’m most proud of is winning 1st place at the 2024 San Diego County Exhibition of Fine Art and then being selected as the cover artist in 2025, along with the Coordinator’s Award. Those moments validated years of quiet, personal work and growth. But honestly, I’m just as proud when someone commissions a portrait and tells me it brought them to tears. That emotional connection — that’s what reminds me why I do what I do.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was naturally artistic and curious, and I loved the challenge of trying to make something look exactly like what I saw. That attention to detail has stuck with me throughout my life. I was also pretty independent — I liked doing things my own way, and if I wanted to learn something, I’d just figure it out through trial and error.

Pricing:

  • Every piece I create is highly customized based on size, subject, and level of detail, so my pricing varies. I usually discuss that privately with clients once I understand their vision.
  • “I like to keep pricing kind of behind-the-scenes—it really depends on the project. But I’m always open to a conversation if someone wants to work together.
