Check Out Brendan Baker’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan Baker.

Brendan Baker

Hi Brendan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Photography has always been more than just a profession for me—it’s a way to explore, document, and challenge perspectives. My journey started in production and event coordination, working in film, media, and live experiences. Over time, I realized that my true passion lay behind the camera, capturing moments that evoke emotion, atmosphere, and narrative depth.

I founded BGB Photo to push the boundaries of traditional photography, incorporating mood, cinematic lighting, and unconventional composition. While I offer corporate headshots, event coverage, brand photography, and wedding photography, my personal work has evolved into a deeper exploration of isolation, transformation, and the relationship between the body and mind. My work delves into the internal landscapes we inhabit—the tension between self-perception and external reality.

Using fog, gels, and experimental lighting techniques, I aim to strip away distractions and place my subjects in surreal, almost liminal spaces. It’s not just about capturing a person; it’s about creating an emotional and psychological atmosphere that tells a story beyond the frame. My recent portraiture leans into the interplay between vulnerability and strength, using shadow and abstraction to emphasize what’s felt rather than what’s seen. While my film photography captures fleeting moments in the real world, my digital work is more sculptural, manipulating light and space to craft a visual narrative that exists somewhere between reality and a dream.

Beyond photography, I run PAK Productions, an event curation and promotion company that blends music, visual art, and immersive experiences. My background in event coordination has given me a unique perspective—helping me understand how lighting, movement, and sound interact to shape an experience. Whether I’m curating DJ lineups, managing visuals, or producing full-scale events, I always aim to bring a cinematic quality to every space I help create.

A major focus of PAK Productions has been fostering inclusive, sex-positive, body-positive, and kink-positive spaces where people within the LGBTQIA+ community can connect in safe, affirming, and judgment-free environments. These events are about more than just nightlife; they serve as platforms for self-expression, empowerment, and community-building.

Through these events, we’ve been able to raise funds for LGBTQIA+ organizations while supporting local artists, performers, and businesses. Our impact was recently recognized when we were nominated for the Hillcrest Honors, an annual celebration that highlights those making a difference in the San Diego LGBTQIA+ community. This nomination reflects the hard work and passion poured into creating spaces where people feel seen, celebrated, and supported.

Community-building is at the heart of everything I do—whether it’s through fostering collaboration between local artists, supporting LGBTQIA+ businesses, or simply providing a space where people can embrace their authenticity without fear or stigma. The intersection of my photography and event work comes down to one thing: storytelling. Through BGB Photo, I tell visual stories of identity, emotion, and transformation. Through PAK Productions, I create spaces where those stories can unfold in real time.

As I continue to grow both projects, I want to keep pushing creative boundaries—whether that’s through experimental portraiture, immersive event production, or new ways of blending visual and experiential art. I’m drawn to the in-between moments—the unspoken, the eerie, the electric—and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road—far from it. In 2023, I lost my job, and like so many others, I found myself navigating the uncertainty of a job market that felt completely different from the one I had built my career in. It’s been difficult, not just in terms of finding new opportunities, but in redefining what stability and success mean in a world where layoffs have become more common than job offers.

But this struggle isn’t just personal—it’s systemic. The post-pandemic economic landscape has left entire industries unstable, wages stagnant, and the cost of living skyrocketing. Creative professionals, service workers, and even those in previously “secure” corporate positions have all felt the ripple effects of widespread layoffs and a shrinking job market. It’s harder than ever to find work that is sustainable, let alone fulfilling, and many of us are being forced to rethink our careers just to survive.

At the same time, the political climate has made things even more challenging, particularly for marginalized communities. LGBTQIA+ rights, worker protections, and access to basic resources are all under constant attack, making it even harder to exist—let alone thrive—in a system designed to push us out. For those of us creating queer and sex-positive spaces, the fight isn’t just about personal survival—it’s about keeping these communities alive in a world that often doesn’t want them to exist.

For me, this challenge has pushed me to lean even harder into my creative work—expanding BGB Photo and PAK Productions as not just passions, but as ways to sustain myself and support my community. It’s been a journey of adaptation, of taking risks, and of believing in what I create, even when the road ahead isn’t clear.

At the same time, I recognize that the struggle is collective, not just individual. So many talented, hardworking people are in the same position, trying to find stability in industries that once felt secure. It’s a reminder that we need to advocate for each other, uplift independent artists, fight for fair wages, and create alternative economies that actually work for us—not just the people at the top.

It hasn’t been easy, and there are still uncertainties ahead, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that resilience and creativity go hand in hand. I may not know exactly what’s next, but I do know that I won’t stop creating, curating, and building spaces where people feel seen and valued—no matter how unpredictable or hostile the world around us becomes.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A lot of what I do has already been covered—my work spans photography, event curation, and creative storytelling. Through BGB Photo, I specialize in portraiture, event coverage, wedding photography, and corporate branding, but my personal projects lean into darker aesthetics, exploring themes of isolation, transformation, and the relationship between the body and mind. I use fog, gels, and experimental lighting techniques to craft surreal, immersive atmospheres that go beyond traditional portraiture.

With PAK Productions, I create inclusive, body-positive, sex-positive, and kink-positive spaces that blend music, visual art, and community-building. These events are about more than just nightlife—they are spaces for expression, connection, and empowerment, especially for LGBTQIA+ communities who often don’t have access to environments where they can fully be themselves.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend photography and immersive event curation in a way that is deeply intentional. Whether through my lens or through the experiences I create, my focus is always on capturing the in-between moments—the eerie, the electric, the unspoken.

I’m most proud of the impact my work has had on my community—from being nominated for the Hillcrest Honors to raising funds for LGBTQIA+ organizations to simply creating spaces where people feel truly seen. In a world that often tries to erase us, my goal is to make sure our stories, our faces, and our experiences are not just documented but celebrated.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Playing it safe will get you nowhere. Success, to me, has come from pushing boundaries, challenging expectations, and refusing to conform. Whether in photography or event production, I’ve built my career by embracing risk—creating surreal, emotionally charged imagery and curating spaces that uplift marginalized communities.

Beyond creativity, resilience and adaptability have been essential. Losing my job in 2023 forced me to rethink everything, but instead of backing down, I doubled down—expanding BGB Photo and PAK Productions into something even bigger. In an unpredictable world, you either evolve or get left behind.

To me, success isn’t about playing it safe—it’s about breaking new ground, amplifying voices, and leaving behind something that matters.
