Hi Catherine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Our story began behind two different chairs. Cate in the world of creative color and women’s hairstyling, and Devin in classic men’s grooming and barbering. Over time, we realized how complementary our crafts were, and how much we both valued not just great hair, but genuine connection and hospitality.
After years of working in salons, running a suite, and even a mobile barbershop, we wanted to take everything we’d learned and create something of our own, a space that reflected both artistry and community.
That vision became Halo and Hive Salon. From the design to the service experience, we built it to feel intentional — refined but approachable, with a focus on education, teamwork, and celebrating local roots. Located where Scripps Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Mira Mesa meet, it’s more than a salon to us: it’s the home base of a creative collective that’s still just getting started.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like a lot of small business owners, we faced plenty of challenges along the way: from navigating rising costs and construction delays to balancing work, life, and family all at once. Opening Halo and Hive meant taking a leap of faith, investing everything we had into a dream we truly believed in.
There were moments of doubt, late nights, and plenty of trial and error. But every challenge taught us something about patience, about teamwork, and about trusting the process. Now, seeing our salon full of clients and stylists who love being here makes every obstacle worth it.

We built Halo and Hive Salon to blend artistry with authenticity. Cate specializes in high-end color, blonding, and modern cutting techniques, while Devin focuses on precision barbering and men’s grooming. Together, we’ve curated a team that shares our commitment to quality, education, and exceptional guest experiences.
We’re known for our attention to detail both in our craft and in how we treat people. From the atmosphere to the service flow, everything is designed to feel intentional and elevated without being intimidating.
What we’re most proud of is seeing our vision come to life, a salon that not only delivers great hair but also builds real connection and confidence. Our goal has always been to create a space that inspires creativity, empowers our stylists, and gives our community something to be proud of.
How do you think about luck?
We’d say it’s been mostly hard work with a little luck sprinkled in. The luck part has been crossing paths with the right people at the right time: supportive mentors, loyal clients, and a great community that’s believed in what we’re building. But the rest has been a lot of long days, late nights, and learning as we go.
We’ve always believed that if you show up, do good work, and treat people right, the “luck” tends to find you.
