Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Thomas.
Hi Chuck, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I had been working as an artist in New York City for over twenty years when I found myself living part-time in the San Diego area. The reason is I had meet a women at an art opening in NYC who lived here., and she soon turned out to be the love of my life. As I continued to travel back and forth between New York City and San Diego to be with her, we started having discussions about using my connections with friends and associates I had cultivated in NYC over the years to start our own art center. Since opening in June 2022 and mounting 2 shows, we have discovered a pool of talent living and working here in the San Diego area. For our next few shows, we plan on focusing on local area artists and artists from the southern California area. A word about the space, the center is in a converted warehouse space with over 5000 square feet of showing space. It is bi-level with 12-foot walls making it the perfect space for larger works. As we continue to grow, we hope to expand to become the largest gallery space in north county. This is an artist-run gallery dedicated to amplifying the voices of committed artists in diverse medium from around the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle at the moment as a new business is getting the word out there, but it seems with every show we double the amount of people attending.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a painter, the easiest way to define my work would be as abstract, although I consider myself an image maker. My work are hybrids, combining elements of figure and landscape into abstract compositions. Utilizing layered strokes and marks of color to shape an image more discovered than planned. World travel influences the cities, locals, figures, and faces meld with nature, creating patterns with the possibility of forms materializing. They are a world of reflections, a mirror image of memory creating a place imaged.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Honestly, compared to New York City, I would say the beauty of the weather and surroundings. It’s much easier to live here. However, the culture here is not as rich as NYC, which is something we are trying to address with this center.
