Today we’d like to introduce you to DaZM.
Hi DaZM, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up in the UK, I fell in love with electronic music. The scene was raw and recall vividly recording Radio One on cassette tapes. No social media existed, of course, as I’m a dinosaur, and to get a DJ gig, it was a matter of going to the venue and making max tapes to send them off either by mail or to your local bars, clubs, and random strangers on the street at times. A little different to today’s marketing strategies! I was around 15 when my older brother would start listening to a lot of trance, which I loved. This involved to all genres of house, including hard house.
I borrowed some money from a friend and bought myself a couple technic 1210’s record decks and practiced in my bedroom for years. Making mixes only I listened to as there was no real way of sharing them.
My love for the music took me all over the UK clubbing and, of course, Ibiza. I was hooked. DJing became my creative hobby, and I don’t know how my parents put up with it as much as they did, but I’d be practicing loudly every day with my vivid imagination. I was happy!
Since then, it’s never left me. I listen to the music religiously, running, driving, and anything in between.
Only up until last year did I start on the social media bandwagon, and things have really picked up. It is and will always remain a hobby and passion of mine, and as much as I enjoy playing live, sometimes the music memories and feeling to gives is enough.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Moving to the US when I was 28 it took a lot of my time and mind away from the music, and I actually left a lot of equipment and a whole stack of vinyl in the UK. Through around 5 years, I didn’t touch DJing and really fell behind just how much the industry had moved on, not just the music at the time but the technology. I needed to learn a lot!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I essentially am a DJ. I simply bring my music to the world and believe it’s a huge part of me. It takes me so long sourcing this music and preparing sets that it really feels I’m giving people a huge part of me. Coming from the UK, I am very biased about the house and clubbing scene and feel I know a little about what it’s like to be on the dance floor and have those incredible feelings.
Being quite an introvert the idea of social media was alien and seemed very intrusive, and still does! I’m proud that I have stuck with it and used it as a platform to share a little of me. I put out free mixes monthly, and the feedback has been huge!
I try to bring music to my small town that I know is new. I want people to hear it for the first time and be hooked, and I want those who come watch me live to know I’ve been on that dance floor and know what it takes to have a great time. I believe I have great taste in music. well, I hope so!
The DJ world is highly male-dominated, and therefore the ego can certainly be involved. I am the most down-to-earth person you’ll know, and do all by the heart. I believe this has always been seen and separates me from many. I love the music and sharing just that is often enough for me, and I have been proud supporter of many local DJs.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That if you’ve got something to share, do it. Not getting attached to any outcomes and just do what you love for you.
