Check Out Devis’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devis

Hi Devis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I remember being obsessed with music at an early age, always thinking about how certain sounds can be layered and how it can spark emotions in people. I started playing a few instruments throughout middle school and high school, and eventually began recording music and producing beats in my free time.

Throughout college I have always been known as the “music guy”, always taking control of the music at events and parties. However, it wasn’t until 2017 when I bought my first controller and started DJing. I fell in love with the art almost immediately, listening and collecting many tracks throughout the years. I was fortunate enough to land gigs the following year, DJing at University events and small functions.

Fast forward to now, having moved to San Diego and immersing myself in the music scene, I am DJing at local clubs and attending as many shows as I can! A few clubs that I have played at so far are VYBZ, Nova, Mavericks Beach Club, and Bloom. Looking forward to connecting with many more artists and playing at more venues / cities.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely not a smooth road! I remember being hesitant on uploading content or reaching out for gigs because I felt like I was not good enough. You definitely have to be your best supporter and keep working on your craft. It was a mindset thing that I had to get over early on.

Another challenge is landing those first few gigs and keeping the momentum going. I remember networking and reaching out to many people for months. My first gig was actually thanks to my friends pushing me to submit a mix to DJ a dance marathon event! That event led me to meeting other people which led me to other gigs as well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I DJ and produce music across a couple of genres. I mainly mix house music, but also love to play hip hop, latino, and bass music. Sometimes a quick change in genre or combination of them adds some flavor to the live experience!

It is difficult to say what I am most proud of right now, but I will say that supporting Two Friends at NOVA this year has been an experience to remember. The energy in the crowd was sky high throughout the night and I had people telling me that they loved my set. Some of them even asked for the names of some of the tracks afterwards. Having my friends there to support and meeting new friends was awesome. Looking forward to the next set.

I have been told that my track selection and taking risks is what differentiates me from others. When DJing, I read the crowd and connect with them, trying to play some track they may like and some new tracks that they might not know they like haha. It is always a risk but also very rewarding. This is true amongst other artists as well, each one has their own taste of music and how they express it.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
