Today we’d like to introduce you to Erick Alayo.
Hi Erick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Alayo Foundation is a registered nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting our community’s access to essential healthcare services. The foundation was established with the mission of offering free lab tests and screenings to individuals without the need for appointments or prolonged waiting times. As a physician, I have observed firsthand the devastating impact that chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, liver cirrhosis, and even cancer, have on patients—many of which could have been prevented with early detection and timely intervention.
At present, the Alayo Foundation is primarily funded through my clinical practice. However, as the foundation grows and our impact expands, we are actively seeking additional sponsorships and partnerships to further our cause. The health events we organize are held at my office, with a small but dedicated team of staff members, as well as my daughters, who graciously assist in ensuring that participants receive their necessary lab work and screenings.
The foundation’s mission is to educate at-risk communities about making healthier lifestyle choices to avoid preventable chronic diseases. This is achieved through community engagement, educational seminars, and health fairs. Our overarching vision is to reduce the incidence of preventable chronic diseases in vulnerable communities, ultimately improving public health outcomes and reducing healthcare disparities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the challenges we have encountered in our efforts is overcoming skepticism from potential participants. Many people find it hard to believe that we provide these health services at no cost, with no charge to them or their insurance providers. In today’s healthcare landscape, it can be difficult to trust that a comprehensive health check-up will be offered free of charge. To address this, we have launched a social media campaign to raise awareness and build trust within the community regarding the true nature of our events.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At our health fairs, participants can expect a thorough health check-up that includes screenings for blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), liver enzymes, hemoglobin levels, glucose, kidney function, glycosylated hemoglobin, liver stiffness, and fat content measurements. We also offer cardiovascular risk assessments and electrocardiograms. In the near future, we plan to incorporate bone densitometry measurements as part of our health screenings. After the completion of these tests, participants are provided with a comprehensive report summarizing their results, along with personalized recommendations for follow-up care and lifestyle changes. At your health fairs, using high-quality lab machines ensures accurate and reliable biometric screenings and other health-related tests, promoting better health outcomes and building trust with participants.
Between our health fairs, my daughter Sandra assists with administrative tasks, ensuring the smooth operation of our events, while my daughter Sofia plays a key role in organizing the logistics and operations. My younger daughter, Karla, helps distribute educational materials to participants, ensuring they have access to valuable information that can help them make informed decisions about their health.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
To be patient and persistent on getting your goals.
