Check Out Jazmyn Glam’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmyn Glam.

Hi Jazmyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up in East Los Angeles, then moved up to the High Desert for a while until I moved to San Diego about five years ago now after meeting a group of boy from Hillcrest at a music festival. I remember they brought me out for the first time one Sunday Funday for Stripper Circus at Richs (which is one of the venues I work in now!) I absolutely fell in love with this town and the people. I knew I belonged in San Diego. I applied for a job, within a week got the job then packed up everything, left my family and job of 7 years and the rest is history! I’ve met so many wonderful people being here. I’ve been given so many amazing opportunities. My drag mother Glitz Glam specifically has been so essential in my success.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do in life. I always felt like others had some sort of game plan and I was lost. Growing up in the projects of East LA college wasn’t something that was pushed on us in school, if you graduated High School that was enough, so I felt like I was too old by the time I figured that’s something I wish I would have focused on in my high school years. I did, however, in later years get some college education in Law, and graduate from the police academy in San Bernardino. Learning the law is my true love. One day I’ll pursue that in some way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Life throw crazy curve balls (I have no idea what a curve ball is as I don’t watch the sport lol) and if you would have told me 5 years ago that I would be a Drag Performer (and actually making decent money from it) I would think you were insane. I’ve always known Drag and queer culture through my mom (Hi, Tina!) but I never thought it was something I’d partake in. My Drag family (Hey Haus of Glam!) encouraged me, supported me and now performing has become a huge part of my life. Drag has given me a body confidence I never thought I’d have. It’s such a creative outlet for me. Trust me it’s NOT easy to get in that stage and even the preparation for one number, but it’s so rewarding. I’m so grateful to have been embraced by the drag community, especially being a biological female, I know sometimes there is someone who doesn’t agree with it, and that’s okay. I definitely receive much more love than hate, so I choose to focus on the positive.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is summertime in the projects. We all didn’t have much, but we always had fun. I remember on hot days someone’s brother or uncle would break the nozzle off a fire hydrant and it would make this huge water geyser and we’d all play in it on the sidewalk and in the street, until the police or firefighters came and chased us away.
