Check Out Jenn Berry’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Berry.

Hi Jenn , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my journey in the funeral profession in 2010 in the beautiful city of Honolulu, Hawaii, where I learned not only the craft of funeral service but also the deeper meaning of compassion, presence, and the true spirit of aloha.

In 2014, I brought that same spirit back to my hometown of San Diego, where it has been my honor to walk alongside bereaved families in our community ever since.

Today, I’m proud to serve as a Licensed Funeral Director and the Location Manager at Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary in Bonita, CA, helping people navigate one of life’s most tender and challenging moments with care, guidance, and dignity.

When I’m not serving families at Glen Abbey Mortuary, you’ll find me soaking up life with my husband, Kevin, and sons. Whether we’re enjoying country concerts, cheering on the San Diego Padres, enjoying our season tickets to Broadway musicals, or making the most of every moment we can with our sons, the time spent with our little family is our favorite.
I’m also deeply committed to giving back—volunteering alongside my husband as a Facilitator for the Re/engage Ministry at Skyline church and dedicating my heart and time to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention as a volunteer and certified Suicide Interventionist.

For me, this work is far more than a career; it’s a calling to walk beside people in their hardest moments, offering comfort, guidance, and a light to help them find their way through the darkness.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey over the last 15 years in this profession has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. I’ve managed to go to school full time while spending 50+ hours a week at the mortuary. This, as you can imagine, was a challenge but worth it because it aided me in being able to obtain my Funeral Directors license. None of that would have been possible without the support of my husband, Kevin.
Funeral service asks you to stand strong in the face of grief, to carry the weight of others’ sorrows while helping them find moments of peace.
There have been long days, difficult goodbyes, and lessons learned through experience—but each challenge has strengthened my resolve and deepened my compassion.
Through it all, I’ve been reminded that even on the toughest roads, there is purpose, and there is the privilege of making a difference when it matters most.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a Licensed Funeral Director, I guide families through one of the most personal and difficult times in their lives. I specialize in creating meaningful, personalized services that truly reflect the life, personality, and values of the person being honored. I’m known for my ability to anticipate needs, offer steady guidance, and provide a calm, compassionate presence when emotions are high.

I’m most proud of the trust families place in me during such a vulnerable time, and of the moments when I can see relief in their eyes—knowing they are cared for, their wishes are honored, and every detail is being handled with respect.

In addition to meeting with grieving families, I lead a dedicated team of over 25 employees, mentoring and inspiring them to grow into the best versions of themselves—both professionally and personally. I also oversee the upkeep and appearance of all our venues, ensure the readiness and maintenance of our fleet of vehicles, and coordinate the many moving parts that allow us to serve families with excellence and heart.

What sets me apart is my commitment to blending professionalism, leadership, and genuine human connection. I don’t see this work as a series of tasks, but as a calling to walk alongside people in their grief, listen deeply, and help them find both comfort and beauty in the way their loved one’s life is remembered.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Books like The Four Agreements, Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy, and Daring Greatly have shaped the way I approach life—both professionally and personally—helping me grow in compassion, resilience, and self-awareness. On my commute to the mortuary, I listen to worship music to center my heart and mind, preparing me to serve families with the focus and care they deserve. I also enjoy podcasts like Rhythms for Life and On Purpose with Jay Shetty, which inspire me to live intentionally, nurture my relationships, and stay grounded in my purpose.
