Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse May.
Hi Jesse, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my photography journey early in 2014 as more of a hobby. I wanted a way to express my creativity and also wanted to push myself to be more adventurous. I began taking landscape photos and documenting my travels with friends and family. Once I moved to San Diego in 2017- I started taking my love for photography more thoughtfully and then began shooting portraits of my friends. I pushed myself to really master my gear, upgrading my camera and then learning all the software I needed, such as; Photoshop and CaptureOne. When the pandemic hit in 2020, I was still working full-time in retail and I knew that I needed a change and to finally chase my dreams. So, I launched my business Jesse May Studios, and went for it. I produce lifestyle imagery, portrait, fashion, and editorial photography. I have been fortunate to work with a variety of different modeling agencies, brands, small business, and influencers throughout San Diego and Los Angeles. Now two years into my work, I am creating a space that I love while pushing my boundaries more and more as my craft evolves.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
When starting, there were no initial struggles. I was fresh into it and in a stage that all I was doing was trying to learn as much as I could. The hardest challenge now has been the learning curve of self-marketing and staying on top of my business analytics. Organizing invoices, sending proposals, doing my own marketing can sometimes be very daunting and draining. I’m thankful that I have a lot of support to help guide me through the business side of things, and I have learned so much in the last two years. Nothing worth it ever comes easy – staying dedicated to my craft and pushing my limits always works the best for me. I thrive under pressure and pushing myself. I know there will still more and more challenges that will occur as my business grows, but I welcome them with open arms.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Portrait, Lifestyle, Fashion, and Editorial photography. I would describe my work as colorful, engaging, and authentic. I do my best to try and get to know my subject and to make them feel as comfortable as possible so that their most true self can come forward. I am most proud of myself in just having the courage to start and intentionally chase after my dreams. I know that I am nowhere near my limit, and I can’t wait to see where my craft and business is in the next 5 years. I would say what separates me from others is my dedication and drive. I am my hardest critique- I think there are ways to always push yourself more, and my attention to even the smallest detail really benefit me in creating unique pieces.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Consistency is key. Dedication, consistency, and creativity are the perfect match. Being a freelance creative can be filled with ups and downs. I have sent off 100 proposals to only get called back on one. Staying true to yourself, being bold, and taking chances, I believe can really push someone to their best form of work. I still have so many lessons to learn as I continue my journey; however, I believe if you are consistent with every step, you will just continue to grow and learn.
