Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica A
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey as a photographer started a few years ago when I opened an online clothing store. I had to take photos of my products and it became one of my favorite parts of that business. I began experimenting with cameras and equipment and I really enjoyed it. After closing that store, I decided to go back to college to pursue a degree in business administration while also earning a certificate in photography.
I began doing portraits for family and friends, which eventually grew into working with clients. Wedding photography captured my heart and I was fortunate to shadow a couple of wedding photographers and learn from them. From there, I began to take small and intimate weddings on my own. I’m honored to help couples preserve some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I started out in photography, finding clients who trusted me with their important milestones was a bit challenging. I didn’t have a large wedding portfolio, in fact I didn’t have a wedding photography portfolio the first few months. I decided to attend workshops and shadow other photographers which helped me build my portfolio and build credibility. I learned how important it is to continue building on this skill. There is so much to learn about in wedding photography specifically. Looking back, each experience has helped me become the photographer I am today; although there is so much more to learn and improve on. Today, I continue my education through workshops, books and YouTube.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding photographer who specializes in capturing intimate moments. Whether it is a courthouse wedding, a church wedding or an intimate backyard celebration, my goal is to capture moments that tell a story. I am known for beautifully composed portraits as well as candid moments that reflect each couples unique love story. One of the things I am most proud of is when clients say they had a fun and relaxed experience in front of the camera. Building trust and helping them enjoy the experience is really rewarding. What sets me apart is my focus on communication. I make sure to understand my clients’ vision and what moments are most important to them, so I can deliver exactly what they want.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One of the best ways I connected with other photographers was by attending photography workshops and taking classes at my local community college. I learned so much from more experienced photographers and gained insight on how they work. I’ve made a couple of friends who are more experienced, and I know I can always reach out to them if I have questions.
