Check Out Jessica Miller’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Miller.

Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My career has been in dentistry, but I’ve always been artistic and had an eye for photography. In college, I was a health-science major but my love for photography really started to blossom during my undergraduate years as people started to ask me to photograph their families, engagements and weddings. In my early years of photography, I never really had to market myself because the business was always just there. I didn’t have a specific market, but I took any and every photography job that came my way simply because I enjoyed it so much.

In 2020, Covid posed a new problem that accentuated the reality that I needed to pivot my full-time career in dentistry and focus on what I am most passionate about, photography. With my main focus in photography being interior design, the housing market boom helped my business grow tremendously. But that did not mean I didn’t have to put in an enormous amount of time and effort to bring my photography business to life.

I am now working with home renovation companies, realtors, home staging and interior designers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my obstacles was juggling two jobs at one time. Initially, I wasn’t financially able to quit dentistry and make an immediate transition into my full time photography business. I was extremely busy and had a lot on my plate. But when I’d start to feel overwhelmed and worn out from balancing all my responsibilities, I’d remind myself why I was doing it. When you tackle the challenge of starting your own company, you risk a lot. But when you start to reap the reward of time invested, stress, sweat and tears, it becomes worth it!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer who specializes in interior design/staging photography. I work with home and commercial renovation companies, realtors, stagers and interior designers.

I am proud of the fact that I have a keen eye for detail and that shows in my work. I spend a significant amount of time during my shoots to perfect the space I am working in and I thoroughly access my post-process work to deliver crisp and clean images.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Good luck has played a role in my photography career as I have been given opportunities by various clients to shoot things I never had prior experience doing. The jobs clients gave me were an opportunity to build my knowledge and skill with hands-on experience. I was amazed I was getting paid to do something I was still learning to do!
As a new entrepreneur, I was constantly battling my insecurities wondering if the product I was delivering would meet their expectations. I feared disappointing people and them not returning for business. But that is how I developed confidence and skills to run a successful photography business. I wouldn’t trade the opportunities that require risk for anything!
