Today we’d like to introduce you to Kai Chang
Hi Kai , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Taiwan under strict family rules, I had little say in my fashion choices. After losing my mom at a young age, my aunt took on the role of raising me. Though she cared deeply, her frequent critiques of my appearance and body left lasting scars on my self-esteem. School wasn’t much of an escape—I faced verbal bullying that only amplified my insecurities.
Everything changed when I attended university. For the first time, I had the freedom to explore who I was, starting with fashion. Styling my roommates and friends became my creative outlet, and I found so much joy in helping them feel confident and beautiful. Every makeover, every smile of self-acceptance, filled me with purpose. That’s when it hit me: fashion wasn’t just about clothing—it was a powerful tool to help people feel seen, valued, and heard.
As I embraced my own unique style, I began to see myself in a new light. I learned to accept my body and image, discovering that true beauty and confidence come from within. Fashion gave me energy and a sense of self I’d never known, and I realized helping others find their style is my calling.
Now, designing clothes and inspiring people to embrace their individuality is what makes me feel most alive. My mission is simple: everyone deserves to feel empowered, confident, and authentically themselves. Fashion isn’t just about how you look—it’s about how you feel and the story you tell the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Two years ago, when I founded Kai, it felt like stepping into the unknown. Leaving behind my career as a registered nurse wasn’t just a bold decision—it was an act of defiance against everything my family back in Taiwan had envisioned for me. They had sent me to the U.S. to earn a master’s in nursing, hoping I would become a professor and bring honor to our name. When I told them I was walking away from that path, their disappointment turned to fury.
They cut me off, refusing to speak to me. To them, I wasn’t just rejecting a career—I was rejecting the dreams they had built for me. They made me feel like a failure, a shame to the family. But in truth, I had felt like an outsider long before this. Growing up, I always felt out of place, pretending to be the “perfect daughter” they wanted while suppressing my true self. That façade was exhausting, and deep down, I knew I couldn’t keep living a life that wasn’t my own.
Then, a life-changing incident forced me to confront the truth I’d been avoiding. It was a moment of reckoning, where I finally asked myself: Who am I? What kind of life do I want to live? These questions sparked a journey of rediscovery and transformation. I realized that staying true to myself meant embracing not only my creativity but also my desire to make a meaningful impact on the world.
This is where Kai was born—not just as a athleisure brand but as a mission. At its heart, Kai stands for sustainability in every sense: sustaining our energy, our beauty, and our environment. I’ve learned that true beauty and lasting confidence come from within, from being honest with yourself and taking care of your body and mind. Kai’s designs reflect this philosophy: versatile, eco-friendly pieces that empower people to feel good about themselves and their impact on the planet.
Building Kai hasn’t been easy. Without my family’s support, I faced financial struggles and moments of crippling self-doubt. But I kept going, fueled by the belief that being authentic to yourself is the most sustainable way to live. Sustainability isn’t just about the environment—it’s about creating a life that aligns with your values and gives you the strength to inspire others.
Kai is a reflection of my journey. It’s about encouraging people to embrace their uniqueness, nurture their inner and outer beauty, and make choices that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable world. Through Kai, I hope to show that it’s possible to stay true to yourself while making a positive impact—on yourself, on others, and on the planet we all share.

In Mandarin Chinese, it signifies “warrior” and “victory,” embodying strength and perseverance. In Japanese, it can mean “ocean” or “restoration,” symbolizing adaptability and renewal. The name carries a deep personal significance as well—my grandfather, who served in the Japanese army, gave me this name, grounding the brand in a legacy of courage and transformation.
