Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Williams Smith.
Hi Karen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have a pretty detailed biography online… Karenwilliamssmith.com
Since that was written, I have started teaching classes at Fallbrook School of the arts. I teach a variety of classes from figurative sculpting to fun ceramics … like dragons, my work has also been included in shows at the Fallbrook Art Center.
These days I am once again doing a variety of techniques. I often do animal portraits in 3D … either sculpted off a canvas in activated papier mâché or in ceramics. I am exploring detailed figurative sculpting again only this time with draped porcelain dipped in slip and applied to figures I have sculpted in porcelain clay. My rock paintings have changed a bit too … they are geologic paintings now. I use a lot of different rocklike textures, rocks, and fossils to create them.
Apparently, I don’t have a lot of my newer photos on the computer … only on my phone. So, you may need to contact me to get some other photos of my newer work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Always stretching. Always trying new techniques and mediums.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Most of those questions can be learned by reading my bio. However, what REALLY is the most powerful and influential thing about my work is my connection to my Maker. All of my work is dedicated to helping Him heal others. I am just his earthly hands. I know that spiritual things are not talked about much in our world today … but truthfully, that is what makes my work different. There is a healing power in it that doesn’t come from me.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Nature is the best resource for most of my work. People are the inspiration for my figurative work. Imagination is the best resource for my crazy stuff (i.e., dragons and monsters)
