Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Abell
Hi Kathy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Thirty years ago, my husband Greg and I designed and built our first home. A few years later—in a small alcove beneath the stairs—I started my own interior design business. Over twenty years later what began with a single desk and a few fabric books has now grown into the wonderful business that Kathy Ann Abell Interiors is today.
Over the years, our business and projects have grown. I love helping clients create homes that they love and feel comfortable in. My family is so important to me—and so, to make spaces for other families to feel at home is so rewarding.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road—weathering the 2008 recession was really tough. But somehow, with God’s grace, our business was able to make it through. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to do what I do—I genuinely love design, so the fact that I’ve also been able to make a career out of it feels so special.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
It’s so important to me that Kathy Ann Abell Interiors feels like a family and I’m so proud to be able to say that’s exactly what we’ve created. We enjoy lunch as a team regularly and love being with one another. Design is so personal to me, I believe that to do your best work and reach your full potential, you need to feel comfortable. Comfortable in your surroundings and your teammates and comfortable enough to ask questions and take risks. It’s been one of my greatest honors to watch my team’s creativity blossom and them grow as designers. Our current team puts so much heart and passion into their work and I am forever grateful for all they do to make this company thrive.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Since starting Kathy Ann Abell Interiors, my goal has always been to design in a timeless way so my clients can enjoy their space for many years to come. This is not to say I don’t love following trends, but I believe in investing in timeless pieces. Then you can bring in accessories that are trending, knowing that your money was spent some pieces that will last a lifetime.
One of the biggest compliments as a business owner is when a past client reaches out to work together again. With each new project, my relationship with them and the scope of work grows. It is important to my heart and to my design process to really get to know my clients. Not only does knowing them help me understand their design perspective, but it also allows me to really make their house FEEL like home.
