Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelle Schlax.
Hi Kelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I think I was born to be a hairstylist. I started beauty school as a home study program my junior year of high school. With the support of my parents, I managed to graduate high school and receive my cosmetology license within months of each other. I worked at Fantastic Sam’s until I had enough money saved to move to San Francisco. There, I took a job at a junior stylist at Carlton Hair International and worked my way up to Northwest Regional Educator/Senior Stylist. I knew I wanted to do hair for my job, but it was when I started teaching people about hair I found my passion. Teaching is in my blood. Passed down from my mother, who was a special education teacher. A shared passion with my sister and cousin, educating feeds our souls. I worked in various salons around San Francisco for the next 13 years. During that time, my focus turned to editorial work, behind the chair work and community benefit fundraisers for The Women’s Community Clinic and ALC (Aids Life Cycle). Somehow, during that time, I managed to grow two beautiful humans and find my husband. Four years ago, my family and I moved to San Diego to be closer to my parents and in-laws. I was lucky enough to catch an interview at The Factory, located in East Village. It was there I met the Muldoons. Michol and Dj, the dynamic father and son duo of Muldoon Inc. The two part company of the salon, The Factory, and a haircutting education company named Knowledge Destroys Fear. I am now, proudly, a full-time behind the chair stylist specializing in textured hair and straight razor haircuts. I create a safe space for all hairstyles and all people, offering ungendered haircuts and specialized textured haircutting techniques. I am also a traveling teacher with the KDF haircutting education team. I am also a very proud mother and forever grateful daughter.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Are there any smooth roads out there? I guess it having the right shocks and tools to travel hypothetical bumpy roads. I have a great support system. My parents and close friends are magical and fill me with love and compassion. I think the hardest thing about having a career in the beauty industry is not falling victim to commercial beauty standards and large beauty product pyramid schemes. My goal as a stylist is to create a safe space for all people because everyone deserves to feel pampered and seen.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a full-time hairdresser that specializes in enhancing natural texture and straight razor haircuts. I believe that hair has no gender and all hair textures are beautiful. I am also a Razor Cutting Educator with Knowledge Destroys Fear team. I am most proud of my continued love and passion for my craft. I am also very proud of my children.
What’s next?
My future plans include seeing how good it can get. I’m so excited to share my 20+ years of knowledge of hairdressing with anybody willing to learn. I plan to continue to work with inspiring people and follow my mentors’ advice. I’m proud to have a safe space for all people in my salon chair at The Factory but mostly excited to watch my kids grow into happy and kind humans.
