Today we’d like to introduce you to La’Shawn Ware & Angela Quach Founders Of R&Body.
Hi La’Shawn Ware & Angela Quach, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Angie: Dancing saved my life. I am not a professional dancer, I started in my late 30’s and consider myself a social dancer. I’ve always been in love with R&B, especially ’90s and 2000s R&B. Being a single, successful independent woman and surviving the pandemic, I began to feel a deep loneliness. I had lost touch with real human connection. In my initial search for more connection, I found Latin partner dance, salsa and bachata, and it changed everything! Through partner dance, I reconnected with my body, my heart, my femininity, and with people in a way I hadn’t felt in years. I knew that I wasn’t the only one that could heal from this, what I experienced on the dance floor is exactly what our generation needs. That’s why I created R&Body™—a new dance genre and movement built to bring back connection, romance, and soul to our communities through the music we already love.
La’Shawn: I am passionate about all forms of dance and trained in a range of styles for over 15 years. When Angie reached out to me about this I knew instantly the need for social dancing in urban nightlife and what we could be inspiring in nightlife connection. I knew it was something we could beautifully co-create together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To answer this question, a lyric from Trey Songz “Rain” comes to mind, “If it were always sunshine, tell me would you miss the rain?”
If everything was always smooth, would you value the struggle that shaped you?
We are always looking for ways to market better, but sometimes we show up to teach to an empty classroom. We knew this would be a journey – it’s a new dance and a new class. On those days, we encourage each other on why we started R&Body. We remember our mission is to serve out students and make leads feel confident and follows feel beautiful on the dance floor. And the days when we do have a full classroom, it fills us with that much more joy and gratitude. We value every student that walks into our class.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
R&Body is on a mission to bring connection back to the club. We are a brand new style of social dance made for R&B music. Think Usher, Beyonce, Janet Jackson… we want to show people how to bring real dancing back to the dancefloor. What makes R&Body so special is there is nothing like it out there, we are here to start a movement of connection over choreography.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Following your passion is a blissful sensation- it requires a level of risk and vulnerability that certainty cannot provide. There is beauty is certainty, it provides comfort and safety. BUT we believe the Universe created risk so we could learn courage, because the most amazing things happen when we learn to have courage.
