Check Out Lucy Anders’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Anders.

Hi Lucy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

I’ve been a classically trained pianist, performer, and teacher since 2008, but my love for music goes back much further. I started piano lessons when I was six years old, and some of my favorite childhood memories are of sitting at the keys for hours, learning how to express myself through sound.

In high school, I competed in classical music, won first in my district, and even performed at state. I played at everything from weddings and college graduation ceremonies to a special event at the Iowa State Capitol. At the same time, I was composing my own music, eventually forming a band and performing my original songs at venues like the iconic Waiting Room Lounge in Omaha. We were about to sign with a record label when one of my bandmates experienced a personal tragedy, and we agreed it was best not to continue.

As a way to cope with this unexpected news, I stepped away from music and into the corporate world. I accepted a job as a property manager and worked my way up to an accounting role. Since I lacked experience, the property management company sent me to college for accounting courses, which I completed with an A average. Although I experienced success in my new career field, I had lost touch with who I was, and needed to shake things up.

In 2021, I moved to San Diego for a fresh start, working as an accountant and living with my sister, Sarah, while I rebuilt. Five months after getting my own place in Pacific Beach, the company I was working for went under, and I was laid off. You’ve got to be kidding me. Now I was living in an apartment I couldn’t afford, in a whole new part of the country I was unfamiliar with, without a job, zero connections, and in a long-distance relationship with my boyfriend, Jose, who was still living back in Nebraska. I definitely know how to shake things up.

I realized during my entire time of climbing the corporate ladder, I had never once stopped teaching piano lessons on the side. You know, “just for fun”. I immediately applied at four different music academies and was hired at all four. I dove back into music with a passion and determination that only a discovery of your true life calling can bring. As I observed each music school’s business model, I began to form inspiring ideas of how I would like to do that for my community on a smaller, more personal scale. I utilized my accounting background and began building a legitimate foundation for a credible, self-run small business of my own.

In 2022, I launched Piano Key Concepts, a place where students of all ages can come to learn and grow. I teach out of my own home, where I create a supportive, fun, and relaxed learning environment, where each student can progress at their own pace, build confidence, and discover the joy of expressing themselves through music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

I live with chronic low back pain caused by hypermobile sacroiliac joints. Earlier this year, the pain worsened so much that shortly after returning from my honeymoon, I suddenly found myself unable to sit, stand, or walk. It was one of the most challenging seasons of my life. During that time, my students showed me so much patience and encouragement, and when I was able to teach again, every single one of them returned.

Since then, I’ve regained my ability to walk and am working on rebuilding endurance and strength. This experience has taught me that it’s ok to lean on my support system and community. Humans are incredibly caring and understanding, and I feel so grateful to have met such kind people through music.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

– I offer free trial lessons where students can swing by and attend a music lesson with me at no charge. This gives each person an opportunity to see if Piano Key Concepts is a good fit for their music goals in a relaxed/no-pressure environment.

– I teach private one-on-one piano and/or voice lessons specifically tailored to each of my students’ unique interests, goals, and learning style. I will often incorporate songs from their favorite shows or video games to help keep them engaged and feel seen.

– I offer a “Music Discovery” option, where students who are interested in learning both piano and voice can take alternating lessons each week without having to pay twice the price.

– I throw friendly competitions, give out prizes, and host recitals twice a year where students can share their progress, gain stage confidence, and feel a part of a supportive musical community.

– I prioritize connection and give my students the space they require to be their true, authentic selves.

What are your plans for the future?

– I will be hosting Piano Key Concept’s fall music recital at La Jolla Riford Library on Saturday, October 18th, at 2pm, and am excited to watch each of my students perform the pieces they’ve invested so much time into learning. This event is open to the public and free to attend, so feel free to swing by and bring your family and friends!

– This fall, I’ll also be celebrating my one-year wedding anniversary with my husband, Jose. We made it through the long distance, and he came out to live with me the same year I started my business. He’s been by my side encouraging me every step of the way, and his love and support have made this journey even more fulfilling.

– My sister, Sarah, just had her first baby on Sept 5th, so I am looking forward to lots of snuggles with my tiny new nephew, Archer!

I hope to continue growing my small business while sharing my love of music with as many people in San Diego as possible, creating meaningful connections and a sense of community through music.
