Today we’d like to introduce you to Machiel Bornman
Hi Machiel , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in a small town in South Africa and had an amazing experience growing up on a farm with my mom, my dad and my sister. I had a pretty ‘normal’ upbringing other than having a wild animal as a pet every now and then. But from early on I could see different colors around people and regularly played with the fairies and gnomes in the garden. When I was 4 years old my grandfather passed away and while the family was gathered I asked my cousin why everyone is upset and she said it’s because our grandfather died, and I said “Well I can still see him standing there.” I had many more experiences like this – when someone passed over I would receive messages from them or still see them around or dream vividly about them. I grew up in a very conservative environment and culture and being gay or talking about spirits walking about was not well received. And during my teenage years I suppressed a lot of these sensations and kept most of it to myself, even though I could still very clearly see an energy field or aura around people all the time. After finishing school and University I lived in Johannesburg and worked as a Graphic Designer, but a life crisis lead me to a psychic reading and it transformed my life – I realized that I was psychic and started developing my abilities. I’ve since studied with teachers and worked with people from all walks of life mainly focussing on mediumship. My first ever clear reading was for my best friend some time after her uncle passed away. He came through very clearly and he said things that only the two of them knew about. She became my ‘manager’ and we’ve had a very colorful journey together. She opened my heart and helped me embrace myself for who I am and to not take life too seriously. It was a hard experience when she fell ill and passed away while she was still young. I was soon guided to take a mediumship workshop in San Diego, which altered my life into a new reality. It was the scariest thing to pack my bags, get on a plane and go to the other side of the world not knowing a single soul. But I managed to meet a wonderful group of people, made many friends and soon found my way back to the US with a nanny job in Encinitas. I met and took care of a bright young baby boy who is almost 7 now. We still hang out regularly and we have a unique bond. While I was working I met and married an amazing person and moved to Los Angeles. We had an incredible time together and went on many adventures seeing beautiful places which I’m very grateful for. During the time while borders were locked down, my mom got diagnosed with cancer and I had to navigate a way back home to South Africa to spend the last time with her. Loosing her was a like the wind had left my sails and the grief changed me to my core. I was very close to her. My body changed and I even had to have an operation to remove a big kidney stone. I took a short break from mediumship and focused on self-healing for a bit. I’ve met my mom in Spirit and I’ve been aware of her sending me messages and signs. I asked her to send specific signs, and it has been happening. As well as my best friend – I know when she is sending me a song on a random playlist at the perfect time or see her sense of humor in my life on a regular basis. Over the last year I’ve obtained my citizenship to the USA and it was such ‘n big day in my life when that happened. Like something I can’t explain. I’ve also had many people help me on this journey and I’m so grateful for everyone of them, I would not be here if it wasn’t for some friends. And today I’m working as a psychic medium in San Diego, Los Angles and Joshua Tree.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth but there has been people, places and experiences that helped some of the landings be not as hard. I have experienced a lot of challenges and adversities in life – growing up gay, sensitive and psychic in a small town was not easy. Immigrating from South Africa to the United States of America was a unique mix of excitement and quarrel. Having to consistently speak a language that is not your native tongue and having an accent can cause some miscommunications. Readapting identity in a new culture on the other side of the world was rough in the beginning but learned to find the fun in it. And the loss of close loved ones and many pets along the journey definitely made it more challenging. Divorce was also a big knock to my system and like any grief experience it comes and goes with it’s own unique set of daily challenges.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work professionally as a Psychic Medium and see clients in person or online for readings. I also give Reiki sessions and offer an online or in person Intuitive Development Program. I’m most proud of developing my own personal Oracle Deck with beautifully illustrated African Animals and channelled messages, called ‘Spirit of Africa’. It’s in the final stages and will be released soon! It will be listed on my website.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Very hard to just choose one favorite childhood memory – I had a pretty amazing upbringing on the farm with a loving family who has always accepted me for who I am. I remember my mom spending a lot of time preparing delicious meals for us and having family time every day around the table is pretty hardcore memory. Doing farm work with my dad and horseback riding on a regular basis really grounded and rooted me at a young age.
