Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeleine Svaneberg Li.
Hi Madeleine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I just moved to California from Sweden to pursue my dream so being given the opportunity to share my story means so much to me. I started making music when I was very young, at around 5 years I made my own little song hook (It went – Come on, come on and lets play guitar lol). I come from a musician family with a piano playing and opera singing mother, and my father was a drummer, so I was always surrounded by music.
At 12 years old I started writing my own songs from scratch and my motivation was actually my anxiety. I had quite severe mental health issues with anxiety and depression and was hospitalized at a childrens psychiatry department in Malmo, Sweden where I am from. Thankfully I got to have my own keyboard in my room and I had a strong urge to express myself since I was basically going crazy with all my emotions. I started writing songs just with piano and singing.
For several years that was my self therapy and I didnt share it that much with others. This is a reason why I have a difficult time working with people who only do this for money since music has always been like life saving and holy for me. About 8 years ago I started producing my music – I found Garageband on my Mac and got completely infatuated. Now I produce all my music in Logic. Today I am far from where I want to be but am thankful to have been performing on some of the biggest music festivals and stages in Sweden, having the opportunity to make music for Melodifestivalen (The Swedish Eurovision), working in the Bagpipe studio (where Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, ABBA and Beyonce have been recording) and now having the opportunity to meet inspiring people and making music in West Hollywood. I have been blessed to be asked to work with the worlds biggest music labels, but so far I want to keep staying independent and as authentic as possible to my expression.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Im far from where I want to be and it has definately not been a smooth road so far. Some of the biggest struggles have been self doubt, social norms, and some toxic collaborations with other creatives unfortunately. The biggest obstacle of all is your mind though, its your own prison where you decide how hard it is to get through the fence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a proud independent artist, producer, songwriter, singer, rapper and pianist. I guess I see myself as a multi creator or something… I love to create. I think my biggest strength is writing songs, composing melodies and arrangements together with lyrics but I am definately getting better and better with producing. I dont know what other people think of when they think of me as an artist but I guess Im known for my courage to mix different genres and maybe a strong stage presence. This is at least what other have told me. Ouf… What Im most proud of is a tough question. I think its really important to regularly feel pride in this field, especially as a young female producer since the music business is mostly made up of male producers. I am really proud of being independent and basically doing everything myself. I think there is no part in my creative process where I actually depend on anyone else anymore. It has not always been like this, I have put at least 10 000 hours into my craft to become independent (literally and spiritually).
What does success mean to you?
Not caring about it haha! Really I think that is a huge part of being truly successful – to not care about success anymore. either because you have achieved everything you want or just because you dont care about it anymore – which is also success in my opinion. I know I havent succeeded when I am too concerned about others opinions. I do this mostly to express myself, ofcourse also to connect with others and to create a community – but for me it has always just been my way of expressing myself. And if I have a Nr. 1 hit record on Billboards, but it doesnt reflect my soul or my authentic expression – then Ive failed.
