Today we’d like to introduce you to Manni (Mani Music) Golbarg
Hi Manni, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I immersed myself in Persian folk instruments like the Tombak and Santoor. With my aunt being both a musician and a museum curator, it was no surprise that I developed a deep love for music and the performing arts from a young age. When I moved to San Diego to pursue my undergraduate degree at UCSD, I started exploring DJing more seriously. However, my focus soon shifted back to my primary goal of attending medical school.
About two years ago, as I prepared to apply to medical schools, I rediscovered my passion for music. It became a vital outlet for expressing myself and managing the stress of working in healthcare while navigating the complex medical school application process. DJing became not only a way for me to unwind but also a means to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
As I started receiving responses from medical schools and eventually secured an acceptance at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York, I decided to embrace my musical interests even more fully. This led to the creation of Smile High Radio with my good friend Sina, who is also a DJ and producer. Our goal was simple: to host local DJs and foster a sense of community. The idea for Smile High Radio was inspired by Lot Radio in Brooklyn, New York. I remember being captivated by Fred Again’s incredible performance there and thinking, “We need this vibe in San Diego.”
Thanks to our efforts, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting many fantastic local artists and organizing vibrant events at local venues. What started as a way to relieve stress and explore creativity has evolved into an essential part of my life, enriching me with countless unique experiences.
Now, as a second-year medical student, I still make time to play music whenever I can. Balancing the joy of bringing energy to the dance floor with a professional career has been incredibly fulfilling.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worth having comes easily. Every journey has its share of ups and downs, but when you’re doing something you love, it somehow feels effortless.
I have to admit, the two things that bring me the most joy are helping people with their medical needs and seeing others light up from the music I play. There’s no better feeling than witnessing people experience happiness and joy through something you’re passionate about. I’m truly grateful to be involved in two fields dedicated to making others feel better.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a DJ, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to play at various venues and events in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Florence, and Lisbon.
What I’m most proud of is the connections I’ve made with so many amazing people from all around the world. It’s truly special to build a network of music lovers who share the same passion and joy for music that I do.
What’s next?
I am looking forward to releasing some tracks that I have been working on.
